Maida (or, all-purpose flour) is a frequently used food ingredient in the kitchen. Usually, a person eats any food to get nutrition and suppress hunger in the body. And multiple interesting tasty foods can be prepared from this all-purpose flour. It can be found in bread, pizza, pasta, cakes, cookies, muffins, doughnuts, noodles, burgers, etc. So, the question arises as to why such a useful ingredient is being asked to be removed from the kitchen warehouse? The process of refining white flour eliminates all its nutrients And that’s why it’s not able to provide any nutritional benefits. Furthermore, white flour is bleached using highly toxic chlorine bleach, which converts flour into a toxic chemical that destroys pancreatic insulin-producing cells. So, if one doesn’t care about their health-factors, they can go on digesting this. But consuming this flour is nothing but devouring something equal to white poison.
Why White flour becomes so harmful to health?
A wheat-grain has three parts- Bran (i.e., fibre), Endosperm(i.e., starch), and germ(i.e., several other nutrients). This bran is the hard layer of grain and packed with numerous vitamins, proteins, different nutrients and most importantly fibres. The endosperm is the main source of grain contains a vast amount of carbohydrates, protein, iron and also vitamins as well. Lastly, this germ is the sprouting section of grain contain higher protein content, have multiple essential vitamins and a massive source of nutritious oil. However, during the refining process, the bran and germs are removed along with all the nutrients they contain. It leaves almost zero vitamins, minerals and fibre. And thus flour has become a food ingredient without any nutrients and it has multiple demerits as mentioned below.
After reading these follow-ups below, decide whether to swallow this ingredient or turn away from it next time. Here are all demerits undermentioned:
All-purpose flour(i.e. maida) lacks nutrients and fiber. Along with digesting quickly, it has a high glycaemic index (GI) which causes a rapid spike in blood sugar and insulin levels in the blood and can turn out to cause type two diabetes.
All-purpose flour leads to weight gain and obesity. Being high in carbohydrates helps in the secretion of insulin which stimulates the production and storage of fat. Along with this, the presence of GI in the flour causes overeating which causes obesity.
Regular consumption of all-purpose flour increases the level of bad cholesterol (LDL). It can lead to various diseases as well as the risk of heart disease and increase blood pressure in the arteries.
All-purpose flour is a starchy food that lacks fiber. Thus, it causes constipation and can trigger metabolism in the digestive system along with disrupting the normal bowel movement.
All bad aspects of all-purpose flour(or maida, white flour) are decoded. Thanks to the growing awareness of the harmful effects of white flour, the FSSAI has now clarified a number of rules. But it is up to the eater to decide whether he will give priority to his taste buds or his health
