Khelo India Tribal Games: Logo, theme song, and mascot unveiled in Bilaspur; Dr. Mandaviya aims to expand athlete opportunities.

The logo, theme song, and mascot of the first-ever Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) were formally unveiled on Tuesday at the Late B. R. Yadav Sports Stadium in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. The games are scheduled for February 14, 2026.

The launch ceremony was attended by Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Vishnu Deo Sai and Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao as Chief Guests, along with officials from the Union Sports Ministry, State Government, and Sports Authority of India.

Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, emphasized that the games will strengthen the talent base emerging from tribal areas. “The Khelo India Tribal Games broadens the scope of opportunities for every athlete in the country. Tapping talent from tribal regions is key, and continuously expanding our athlete base is the requirement of the hour. We are ensuring that talented youngsters from tribal communities are identified early, supported systematically, and integrated into the national sports framework,” he stated.

The KITG 2026 will be co-managed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Indian Olympic Association, National Sports Federations, and the Chhattisgarh state organizing committee, with technical standards aligned with international benchmarks.

A significant highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of the official mascot ‘Morveer’. This name is deeply rooted in Chhattisgarh’s cultural ethos. Derived from the words ‘Mor’, meaning mine or our own in Chhattisgarhi, and ‘Veer’, symbolizing courage and valour, Morveer embodies the spirit, pride, and identity of India’s tribal communities.

The inaugural edition of the games will feature seven competitive sports disciplines: Archery, Athletics, Football, Hockey, Wrestling, Swimming, and Weightlifting. Additionally, two demonstration sports will showcase India’s indigenous sporting traditions.

A primary objective of the Khelo India Tribal Games is talent identification. Promising athletes identified during the Games will be inducted as Khelo India Athletes, making them eligible for scholarships of ₹5 lakh per year for eight years. This includes financial support and comprehensive assistance, aiming for long-term athlete development. The Games seek to integrate this vast talent pool into India’s mainstream sports framework.

Chhattisgarh is the first state to host this landmark national event dedicated exclusively to tribal athletes, marking a significant milestone in India’s sporting journey aimed at tribal empowerment and grassroots inclusion.

The Khelo India Tribal Games is part of the Khelo India Scheme, a flagship Central Sector initiative by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, aimed at promoting mass participation and sporting excellence. The Khelo India Games were declared an ‘Event of National Importance’ in 2020 under the Sports Broadcasting Signals Act, 2007.

To date, seven editions of Khelo India Youth Games, five editions of Khelo India University Games, six editions of Khelo India Winter Games, two editions of Khelo India Para Games, the first edition of the Khelo India Water Sports Festival, and the first edition of the Khelo India Beach Games have been successfully conducted, with participation from 36 States/UTs.

Nagesh Trophy: CAB Rajasthan and CAB Kerala secure victories in league matches

Rajasthan produced a dominant all-round performance to secure a convincing 10-wicket victory over Himachal in a league match of the 8th Edition of the Nagesh Trophy – Men’s National T20 Cricket Tournament for the Blind, held at the Railway Sports Ground, Hubli.

After winning the toss, Rajasthan opted to field and executed a disciplined bowling display, restricting Himachal to 164/8 in 20 overs. Vijay Kumar anchored the innings for Himachal with a brisk 104 runs, while BR Kaushal chipped in with 22 runs. Despite Vijay Kumar’s resistance, Rajasthan’s bowlers maintained a steady rhythm, with regular wickets preventing Himachal from building significant momentum. Rajasthan skipper Lalit Meena (B1) led from the front, capturing two wickets, well supported by Murari Lal (B2).

In response, Rajasthan showcased complete batting dominance. Openers Nikhil Maharshi and Rohitash made light work of the chase, remaining unbeaten and guiding the team to victory in just 14.4 overs. Nikhil Maharshi scored a fluent 65 off 46 balls, while Rohitash launched an aggressive 86 off 47 balls. Their explosive partnership ensured a swift finish without the loss of a wicket.

For his match-winning knock and impactful all-round contribution, Nikhil Maharshi (CAB Rajasthan) was deservedly named the Player of the Match.

    Kerala Secures an Emphatic Win

Kerala continued their momentum with a commanding performance, registering a comprehensive nine-wicket win over Maharashtra in another league match of the tournament.

After winning the toss, Maharashtra elected to bat but faced tight control from a disciplined Kerala bowling attack. Maharashtra was bowled out for 109 in 16 overs, with Anil Belsare (B3) top-scoring with 31 runs, while Swapnil Dilip Wagh added 28 runs off 22 balls. Kerala’s bowlers shared the spoils effectively, led by Sayanth K.B. (B1) and Jayakrishnan, who each claimed two wickets, supported well by Sachin (B2) and Snehith (B2).

In reply, Kerala cruised to the target in just 10 overs. Sayanth K.B. (B1) played a fluent knock of 48 runs, while Snehith (B2) remained unbeaten on 31, steering the innings confidently. Captain Arjun P. (B3) also stayed not out to seal the victory, as Kerala lost only one wicket in the chase.

For his impactful all-round performance, Sayanth K.B. (B1) was named the Player of the Match.

  • 2nd T20I: Harmanpreet chooses to bowl, Sneh Rana replaces ill Deepti Sharma

2nd T20I: Harmanpreet chooses to bowl, Sneh Rana replaces ill Deepti Sharma

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and elected to bowl first against Sri Lanka in the second T20I of the five-match bilateral series at the Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.

India made one change to the playing XI from the first match, bringing in Sneh Rana for the World No. 1-ranked ODI bowler in ICC Rankings, Deepti Sharma, who is unwell and has a fever. Sri Lanka opted to retain the same playing XI that participated in the opening match of the series.

Although this is her second consecutive toss win, Harmanpreet Kaur mentioned that it feels like a new experience for her, as she is not accustomed to winning the toss but is enjoying it. “Deepti is not well, Sneh Rana returns. We played well, nothing changes, same approach,” said the Indian skipper.

Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu expressed confidence in her team, stating, “We’re going with the same XI, I’m confident about my team. Gotta play confidently, that’s the most important thing. Last game, we played behind the wicket. We have to play straight to our strength,” she added.

The ODI World Cup-winning India leads the five-match bilateral series 1-0 after winning the opening T20I at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. The Indian bowlers delivered a superb performance, restricting Sri Lanka to 121/8. • Dutch Stay on Top as India Men Face Drastic Fall in 2025 FIH World Rankings Update

Dutch Stay on Top as India Men Face Drastic Fall in 2025 FIH World Rankings Update

The Netherlands men’s and women’s teams upheld their dominance, securing trophies and titles that kept their competitors at bay as the FIH World Rankings saw significant changes in a pivotal year leading up to the 2026 World Cups.

International hockey in 2025 featured a relentless schedule of high-profile events—from the FIH Hockey Pro League to Nations Cup drama and Continental Championships across all continents—which spurred remarkable shifts in the World Rankings, as reported by the sport’s global governing body on its official website.

As the year comes to a close, established powers in both the men’s and women’s games reinforced their standings while emerging teams made notable progress.

    Women’s Rankings Insights

In the women’s rankings, the Netherlands (3809), who began the year in first place, maintained their stronghold throughout the season, adding more trophies to their collection with championship victories at the Pro League and the EuroHockey Championships. Argentina (3326), Belgium (3109), and China (2977) kept their second, third, and fourth positions respectively, buoyed by impressive performances in the continental championships and Pro League, according to the FIH report.

Spain (2777) emerged as one of the year’s biggest gainers within the top-10 rankings, inching up to fifth place from eighth at the start of the year. Their rise came at the expense of Australia (2758), Germany (2734), and England (2510), all of whom dropped one position to finish sixth, seventh, and eighth respectively.

New Zealand (2319), champions of the Women’s FIH Hockey Nations Cup and the Oceania Cup in 2025, climbed to ninth place, surpassing India (2315), who faced relegation from the Pro League this year. Japan (2186) and the United States (2172) gained two places each, reaching eleventh and twelfth, while Ireland (2030) and Chile (1999) fell to thirteenth and fifteenth respectively, with Scotland (2015) sitting in fourteenth.

Korea (1864) remained at sixteenth, trailed by France (1742), whose success at the FIH Hockey Nations Cup 2 allowed them to rise three spots. Italy (1737), Uruguay (1736), and South Africa (1670) rounded out the top-20, with Canada (1668) and Malaysia (1667) just outside.

    Men’s Rankings Overview

In the men’s rankings, the Netherlands (3376) and Belgium (3225) sustained their positions at the top, while several teams below them experienced tumultuous shifts compared to the start of the year. Germany (3116) climbed one spot to third after a successful EuroHockey campaign, followed by Argentina (3022), which ascended to fourth from eighth at the beginning of the year. Australia (3007) and Spain (2995) also moved up one position each to fifth and sixth, while England (2864) and India (2845) saw the largest drops, having started the year in third and fifth respectively.

France (2371) remained in ninth, while New Zealand (2254) and Ireland (2246) swapped their standings since the year began. South Africa (2127) and Malaysia (2097) maintained their positions in twelfth and thirteenth.

After their promotion to the FIH Hockey Pro League, Pakistan (2034) moved up to fourteenth, followed by Wales (1989) and Korea (1981). Egypt (1956), having had a remarkable debut at the FIH Hockey Nations Cup 2, made significant gains, landing in seventeenth. Japan (1982), Canada (1863), and Scotland (1843) completed the top-20, with Austria (1805), Chile (1727), China (1723), Poland (1694), and the United States (1690) following closely behind.

    Ranking Calculation Model

The rankings calculation model introduced by FIH on January 1, 2020, shifted from the previous tournament-based system to a dynamic, match-based method where teams exchange points in official, FIH-sanctioned games. The points exchanged depend on the match result, the relative ranking of the teams, and the match’s significance.

Using the Elo rating system as its foundation, when teams compete, ranking points are exchanged, with the points gained by one team equaling the points lost by the other. Teams earn more points for defeating higher-ranked teams and consequently lose more points when losing to lower-ranked teams, and vice versa.

    Men (top 10)

    1. Netherlands
    2. Belgium
    3. Germany
    4. Argentina
    5. Australia

PM Modi welcomes javelin star Neeraj Chopra and wife Himani at his home

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra and his wife, Himani Mor, at his residence, 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, on Tuesday.

    Great Interaction with PM Modi

The Prime Minister mentioned he had a fulfilling discussion with the javelin ace on various topics, including sports, and shared glimpses of the meeting on social media. PM Modi posted on X, “Met Neeraj Chopra and his wife, Himani Mor at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg earlier today. We had a great interaction on various issues, including sports, of course!”

    Honours and Achievements

In October this year, Chopra received the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. He was enlisted in the Indian Army as a junior commissioned officer in the rank of naib subedar on 26 August 2016, and has served with The Rajputana Rifles.

Chopra made history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. He continued his remarkable performance by securing gold at the World Athletics Championships in 2023 and a silver medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

In recognition of his achievements and service to the nation, Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra was awarded an honorary commission in the Territorial Army by President Droupadi Murmu on April 16, 2025. He has also been honoured with the Padma Shri, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, the Arjuna Award, the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, and the Vishisht Seva Medal.

    Record-Setting Performance

During the 2025 season, Chopra participated in numerous events, clinching victories in four competitions, including the Paris Diamond League and the Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru.

  • Karnataka’s Smaran Ravichandran: The All-Format Star Fueling Team’s Success

Karnataka’s Smaran Ravichandran: The All-Format Star Fueling Team’s Success

Smaran Ravichandran has never been interested in choosing between formats. For the 22-year-old, the goal has always been to excel as a batter in all three formats of the game.

“The goal right from the beginning when I started playing was to focus on all three formats and to become an all-format player for the country has always been my goal. All my work ethics and all the preparation that goes in during the off-season goes into all the three formats and not just one particular format. Yes, I would lay emphasis more on the red-ball aspect in order to play Tests for the country. But I think it’s equally important to focus on the other two formats as well. As I said, my goal has always been to represent the country in all three formats. So I think even now my preparation and everything that I do will go into getting my team through across all three formats,” Smaran shared in an exclusive conversation ahead of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where Karnataka enters as defending champions.

This declaration is ambitious, considering that playing all three formats as a batter is rare due to hectic scheduling. However, it is supported by numbers that suggest Smaran is walking the talk. After a challenging start to his first-class career, he has quickly become one of the closely followed batters in Indian cricket, thanks to his ability to adjust seamlessly between formats.

His rise to public memory came in last season’s Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he amassed 432 runs, including a match-winning century in the final. He ended the last Ranji season with scores of 203, 35 & 133 not out, and also had notable scores of 77 & 10, 3, 220 not out, 54 & 4, and 227 not out.

In that Vijay Hazare Trophy final against Vidarbha in Vadodara, Karnataka were struggling early on a pitch conducive to batting. However, Smaran, playing in his first senior final for the state, recognized the opportunity to do something special.

“We were three down for 60-65 odd runs (67/3). As I recollect, the wicket was good to bat and just needed one partnership to get the team through. Me and (KL) Shrijith (who made 78) got a really big partnership to take it forward from there. With Abhinav (Manohar) coming in at the end and giving us those hits, we got to a very good score of 350 or 348 if I’m not wrong. Lifting the trophy for Karnataka has always been the dream. I’m glad that we did it and now heading into this Vijay Hazare Trophy, obviously, we are the defending champions and hopefully we can get another title home,” he added.

Smaran has no hesitation in stating that the 101 in that final ranks at the top of his list of best knocks in his career so far. It’s significant not only for the runs but for what it represented—Karnataka’s first domestic trophy in five years and his own arrival on the big stage.

His maiden first-class century, scored at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, comes a close second. It came in his sixth game after a lean opening phase, making the breakthrough particularly sweet.

As he heads into the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, Smaran carries the momentum of having amassed 319 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 158.70 for Karnataka in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, although the team failed to qualify for the knockouts.

With a longer break available, Smaran had ample time to prepare for switching from 20-over cricket to 50-over format. After returning to chilly Bengaluru, he worked with his childhood coach Syed Zabiulla for a week to prepare for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, including playing a few practice games within the state’s setup.

Outside cricket, Smaran enjoys playing paddle and catching up on all kinds of movies in Hindi, English, and Kannada, with crime thrillers being his preferred genre. However, he recognizes that the transition from red-ball to white-ball cricket isn’t straightforward. In the Ranji Trophy, the focus is on occupying the crease for extended periods, while T20 cricket demands explosive bursts and immediate gear changes, often requiring 3-4 days of focus on quality power-hitting.

Moving from T20 to 50-over cricket feels more manageable for Smaran. “In the Ranji Trophy, you focus on playing the entire day or one and a half days. The focus is to stay at the crease. But in T20s, it’s about those short bursts of runs, and the intensity is higher, and you straight away switch into different gears. So that was challenging. Heading into Vijay Hazare, the switch is going to be easier compared to when we switched from Ranji Trophy to Mushtaq Ali because it’s still the white-ball format. Obviously, in the 50-over format, you have that extra time to settle down and take your time out there in the middle, unlike the T20 format.”

Smaran’s brief stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) during this year’s IPL allowed him to interact with some of T20 cricket’s most destructive players. Although he wasn’t a direct replacement for Adam Zampa, Smaran reflected on how surreal it was to transition from watching IPL matches on television to sharing a dressing room with international stars.

Though his stint was cut short by an injury after tripping over an advertising hoarding while taking a catch during practice, the conversations he had with Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan were invaluable for Smaran, who stands just shy of six feet and possesses the natural ability to clear the boundary. His strength lies square of the wicket—a result of his sharp length detection and assured back-foot play.

“I spoke to Klaasen and had conversations with Ishan regarding how they approach the game in T20 format. A lot of valuable inputs came from Klaasen about how he stays still and maintains a solid base while hitting. Just conversations like that helped me improve my game,” he said.

Those insights are now part of his own game, as he continues to develop the power-hitting skills necessary in modern white-ball cricket. Growing up, he admired Kumar Sangakkara and Michael Hussey—two left-handers renowned for their adaptability across formats. Smaran recalls watching Sangakkara’s 287 against South Africa, part of a record 684-run partnership with Mahela Jayawardene, and was left in awe of the patience and concentration required to bat for long periods in Tests.

“The ability to occupy the crease through extended phases is something I know I must continue developing. There are still phases of the game where during a Test match I feel the urge to play aggressive shots. That is something that I still have to work on. Yes, patience is a big aspect of Test cricket, but it’s still a work in progress. I try hard to bat long phases without losing concentration. It’s easy to say but hard to execute, and that’s something I need to keep in mind,” he explained.

While his cricketing career accelerates, Ravichandran hasn’t abandoned his academics. He is currently pursuing an MBA in finance at Ramaiah University in Bangalore after completing his B.Com degree. Balancing sports and education is a philosophy his parents have always insisted upon.

“Right from the beginning, they have been supportive of my journey and have allowed me the freedom to pursue both because, with the competition in the country, there is no guarantee in sports,” he says.

Are his parents satisfied with his progress in cricket? “The answer is no because there is still a long way to go. My mom recently asked why I didn’t score runs in the last two games of the Mushtaq Ali Trophy. That’s the motivation my mom keeps giving me.”

Smaran’s cricketing journey started with a decision made by his mother—to keep her restless son engaged and outdoors. She enrolled him in a cricket coaching academy that opened nearby, hoping it would channel his energy.

“I always had an interest in cricket but didn’t know the intricacies of the game or how professional cricket worked. That’s when I met my coach and gradually progressed,” Smaran shared.

What began as a parenting strategy has laid the foundation for a promising cricket career. In his early years, Smaran was an all-rounder who bowled off-spin, although he now bowls significantly less. “I still bowl off-spin, but not as frequently. Until I was about 14 or 15, I played as an all-rounder. However, after I grew taller, I lost some accuracy in my off-spin.”

“But that is something I still want to work on because, as the game evolves, having multiple skills is important.”

Smaran represented Karnataka at every level, making his under-19 debut at just 15 and piling up runs in under-16 cricket. This early success fueled his ambition of representing India at the 2022 Under-19 World Cup. However, the Covid-19 pandemic intervened, suspending cricket worldwide.

When the game resumed, Smaran couldn’t make the cut for the tournament, which India eventually won. “That was something I really aimed for. My main goal was to represent India in the under-19 World Cup, but that didn’t happen. But it’s all part of the game. The game always has its ups and downs. After that, I realized my focus should be on representing Karnataka at the senior level and playing Ranji Trophy for the state,” he reflected, maintaining a polite tone rather than expressing frustration.

This recalibration paved the way for Smaran to break into the senior Karnataka team. “I’m glad I made my debut last year and I’m looking to build on that. My main goal is still to win many tournaments with Karnataka and any team I play for.”

For Smaran, personal milestones matter less than collective success. Watching Vinay Kumar lead Karnataka to back-to-back Ranji Trophy titles and trebles in 2013/14 and 2014/15 instilled in him a clear sense of the expectations from the current crop.

“To stand there in whites or any format and lift the trophy with Karnataka has been a dream. Returning Karnataka to its consistent winning ways will be my main priority. Hopefully, we can achieve that in the upcoming years and this season—we can win both trophies and bring them home. That’s definitely the goal, regardless of whether I’m the top scorer or not. As long as we bring the trophy back home, that’s the cherry on the cake,” he concluded.

  • Deepti named No. 1 T20I bowler; Wolvaardt takes over as top ODI batter from Mandhana

Deepti named No. 1 T20I bowler; Wolvaardt takes over as top ODI batter from Mandhana

India all-rounder Deepti Sharma and South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt have emerged as significant gainers in the latest ICC Women’s Player Rankings, with both securing top positions.

    Deepti Sharma’s Remarkable Rise

Deepti has climbed to the No.1 spot among T20I bowlers for the first time in her career, following her stellar performance in the opening match of India’s T20I series against Sri Lanka at home. Meanwhile, Wolvaardt has regained the No. 1 ranking in the ODI batters list, a position previously held by Indian star Smriti Mandhana, after the conclusion of South Africa’s ODI series against Ireland.

Australia’s Annabel Sutherland had been the top-ranked T20I bowler since August, but Deepti’s impressive figures of 1-20 from four overs against Sri Lanka in Vizag were enough to propel her to the number one spot. Vijay Hazare Trophy Bengaluru matches relocated from Chinnaswamy to BCCI CoE

All Vijay Hazare Trophy matches that were scheduled to take place at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium have been relocated to the BCCI Centre of Excellence due to a directive from the Karnataka government citing security issues.

“All Vijay Hazare Trophy matches scheduled to be held at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will now happen at the BCCI CoE. It’s a decision that was taken earlier in the day due to security reasons, as stated by the state government,” a DDCA official conveyed.

The official further noted that both participating teams for the opening game have been notified, and their pre-match training session is now set to take place at the BCCI CoE. “The Delhi team has been told about it and their pre-match practice against Andhra will now happen at CoE,” the official added.

All Vijay Hazare matches in Bengaluru will be conducted without spectators. Bengaluru police have guaranteed a strong security presence around the Aerospace Park, where CoE is located.

Karnataka Police have refused permission for the Vijay Hazare Trophy match between Delhi and Andhra Pradesh at Chinnaswamy Stadium, citing serious safety and crowd-control concerns.

This decision was made after a thorough inspection by Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar, along with officials from the Greater Bengaluru Authority and the Fire Department, who identified critical gaps in venue infrastructure and emergency preparedness.

On Monday, a committee constituted by the Karnataka government, including officials from the police, public works, and fire safety departments, inspected the Chinnaswamy Stadium and submitted a report.

The Bengaluru City Police Commissioner had previously issued a 17-point advisory outlining mandatory safety measures. The committee verified compliance with these points and submitted its findings to the government.

“The committee had gone to the stadium on Monday, on the instructions of the Home Department. Officers from various departments, including fire, Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (Bescom), Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), and police, had inspected the stadium. As per the report from the officers, permission has not been granted for the match on Wednesday at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The committee has also provided a detailed report,” Commissioner Singh stated.

The KSCA had earlier expressed confidence in staging matches featuring Kohli and Pant at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
