Survey: 62% of India’s Gen Z to Plan Music Trips in 2026, Says Airbnb Research

Experience-led tourism is gaining momentum among India’s Gen Z. A recent survey by Airbnb indicates that over 62% of young Indians plan to travel for concerts and music festivals in 2026. The study emphasizes music as a key motivator for both domestic and international travel, with 76% of respondents stating they have visited a city specifically for a live event. This trend showcases a shift in travel preferences, as many young travelers are extending their stays to explore local cultures beyond the concert experience.

Music as a Travel Catalyst

The Airbnb survey reveals that music has emerged as a primary driver for travel among India’s Gen Z. Findings indicate that 76% of young travelers have chosen to visit a city for the first time to attend a live music event. This suggests that concerts are not just standalone occasions; they act as gateways to broader exploration. Around 53% of respondents reported extending their trips beyond concert dates to immerse themselves in local neighborhoods. This evolution indicates that cultural experiences are increasingly shaping destination choices, moving away from traditional travel patterns based on seasonal calendars or long weekends.

Economic Impact and Spending Habits

The economic implications of this trend are significant. The survey shows that six out of ten young travelers are willing to allocate between 21% and 40% of their monthly income to music-related experiences. On average, respondents reported spending around Rs 51,000 on their most recent event-led trip. The preference for social travel is also evident, with 70% of participants attending these events in groups or with friends. This collective approach not only enhances the experience but also contributes to local economies as young travelers engage with various cultural offerings.

International Travel Aspirations

The survey also highlights the global aspirations of Gen Z travelers. More than 40% expressed a willingness to travel internationally for music events, with the United States (48%), Asia (46%), and Europe (45%) being the top destinations. This international interest underscores the growing significance of concert tourism as a means of cultural exchange and exploration. Domestically, music events play a crucial role in promoting tourism dispersion, introducing travelers to new cultural districts and local businesses, including cafes and nightlife venues.

Changing Travel Behaviors

Amanpreet Singh Bajaj, Airbnb’s Country Head for India and Southeast Asia, noted that the increasing interest in music concerts and festivals is reshaping traveler behavior. He emphasized that this new breed of traveler views music as a gateway to discovering new destinations. This evolving trend is driving demand for accommodations that cater to groups, allowing them to gather comfortably and create memorable shared experiences. Large-format festivals, such as Lollapalooza India, exemplify this shift, with 62% of attendees citing the festival atmosphere as a reason to return, and 98% expressing intent to attend future editions. Planning for these events often begins early, with 36% of Gen Z travelers starting their arrangements as soon as an event is announced.
