Renshaw and Wildermuth’s centuries propel Brisbane Heat to BBL’s highest-ever chase

Brisbane Heat produced a night for the history books at the Gabba, achieving the highest successful run chase in Big Bash League (BBL) history by chasing down a target of 258 to beat Perth Scorchers with a ball to spare on Friday night.

Incredible Victory

The Heat finished their innings on 258/2, successfully chasing 257 for an impressive eight-wicket victory that will be remembered as one of the best in league history.

Record-Breaking Partnership

Matt Renshaw and Jack Wildermuth formed a record-breaking 212-run partnership, marking the first time in T20 cricket history that two batters scored hundreds during the same run chase. In an exhilarating display at the Gabba, Brisbane overcame Perth’s total of 257 in front of 24,277 spectators, showcasing the exciting nature of the format.

Renshaw scored 102 off 51 balls while Wildermuth finished unbeaten on 110 off 54 deliveries. This partnership also set the record for the highest in a BBL match, while a total of 36 sixes were struck throughout the contest.

Perth’s Strong Performance

The Perth Scorchers had earlier delivered a formidable performance. They opted to bat first and amassed a remarkable 257/6, the second-highest total in BBL history. Cooper Connolly contributed 77 off 37 balls, complemented by Finn Allen’s explosive 79 off 38. Together, they formed a devastating partnership that included 14 sixes.

Nick Hobson added a crucial unbeaten 48, setting a challenging target for Brisbane. Despite Xavier Bartlett taking two wickets, he conceded 44 runs, while Shaheen Afridi had a tough outing, giving away 49 runs.

Bumpy Start for Brisbane

Brisbane’s chase began poorly when captain Colin Munro was dismissed for a golden duck off the first ball by Jhye Richardson. However, Renshaw and Wildermuth launched an extraordinary counterattack, quickly stabilizing the innings as their partnership flourished. Renshaw, who hit nine sixes, reached his century in just 48 balls before being run out late in the innings.

Wildermuth, on the other hand, remained unbeaten on 110, clearing the ropes nine times and hitting five fours, capping off one of the most memorable chases in T20 history.

Record-Breaking Night

The night was marked by several notable records: the highest successful chase in BBL history and the third-highest in T20s, the most sixes in a single game, the highest partnership in a match, the first instance of two tons scored in a game, and the first time two batters made centuries in a T20 chase.
