On the 126th birth anniversary of the legendary freedom fighter Sardar Udham Singh, veteran actor Raj Babbar opened up about his experience portraying this iconic figure on screen.
Reflecting on His Role
Babbar shared his thoughts on Instagram, where he highlighted the profound responsibility that came with bringing Udham Singh’s story to life. He posted a throwback video from the film along with a caption that emphasized the historical significance of Sardar Udham Singh and the tragic Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
He pointed out that the massacre represented a grave injustice against humanity, noting that although the British government punished General Dyer, Sardar Udham Singh took matters into his own hands to seek revenge for these atrocities in England.
Personal Impact
Describing the experience of playing Udham Singh as thrilling and profound, Babbar stated, “The incident of Jallianwala Bagh was an incident of injustice committed to the whole humanity. Even the British government had punished Dyer. But the revenge of the Inddigihunt was left which the great son of the country Sardar Udham Singh completed by visiting England and playing on his life.”
He further added, “Playing the role of Udham Singh Ji personally is such an experience that makes me thrilled even today. Salute to such son of the country, the symbol of indomitable courage and resolve Sardar Udham Singh on his birth anniversary.”

Raj Babbar portrayed Sardar Udham Singh in the 1999 Indian Punjabi film “Shaheed Uddham Singh,” which was theatrically released on December 24, 1999, just two days before Singh’s birth centenary.

Born in 1899 in a village in Punjab, Sardar Udham Singh avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by assassinating Michael O’Dwyer, who was the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab at the time.
