Singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus is confident in her hustling skills. The 33-year-old artist secured writing credits for the song “Dream As One” in the upcoming film “Avatar: Fire and Ash” by directly telling director James Cameron that she was interested.
Cyrus reflected on her encounter with the Avatar filmmaker at the 2024 D23 Expo, where both were recognized as Disney Legends. She shared with People magazine, “I kind of throw it out there as I always do. I already knew the answer to, ‘So what have you been up to?’ I know he’s been up to Avatar for a very long time.”
She conveyed a special message to Cameron, saying, “Just lemme know if you ever need any music.” This moment came at a perfect time during the development of the third of five planned Avatar films. Cyrus mentioned, “It just kind of organically happened. James actually calls us ‘Legends in law.’”
Interestingly, Cyrus used a similar approach for her other songwriting success. She wrote the Golden Globe-nominated “Beautiful That Way” for Gia Coppola’s film The Last Showgirl, which features Pamela Anderson, by using the same method.
“I did the same thing to (Last Showgirl star) Jamie Lee Curtis. That’s how I ended up doing ‘Last Showgirl’ and now being a part of ‘Avatar’,” she explained.
When asked if offering original music to filmmakers is her go-to strategy for getting involved in movies, she responded, “No, literally. That’s why I went to the Oscars this year. Everybody that came up and introduced themselves, I said, ‘Well, if you need any music, I’m around.’”
This approach also extended to the creators of Netflix’s Emmy-winning Baby Reindeer. She mentioned, “I don’t know what I would write for Baby Reindeer season two, but I threw that out there.”
