Actress Kalki Koechlin, known for her recent role in the web series “Bhay,” has shared insights about her character, Irena. She mentioned that the fictional nature of Irena offers emotional access without distorting reality.
Freedom Through Imagination
Kalki elaborated on her character’s background, stating that while Gaurav’s character is based on a real individual, Irena was crafted through the writer’s imagination. This creative freedom allowed them to explore the supernatural elements while remaining grounded in reality.
Kalki expressed, “Irene is a fictional character, but Gaurav and the Indian Paranormal Society were very much real. In fact, the Indian Paranormal Society still exists. That gave us a certain freedom in how we approached the supernatural elements, while also staying rooted in reality.”
Intriguing Narrative Structure
What piqued Kalki’s interest in “Bhay” is its ability to weave between the past and present. She highlighted that viewers are not just witnesses to an unfolding investigation; they also experience how history, memory, and unanswered questions intertwine with the present.
A Personal Connection to the Mystery
Kalki noted that Irene’s personal trauma intensifies her involvement in the mystery. “Irene carries an emotional secret of her own. Her ex has died by suicide, and that loss shapes how she responds to Gaurav’s story. She doesn’t say it out loud, but it’s always there. That’s what makes the investigation personal for her. For me, Gaurav’s death remains the most unsettling part. The idea that he supposedly strangulated himself is very hard to believe. There is still so much around it that remains unexplained,” she explained.
