Dhakshineswar Suresh earns wild card entry for Bengaluru Open 2026, showcasing India’s rising talent

Dhakshineswar Suresh, an emerging Indian tennis talent, has been granted a wild card entry into the singles main draw for the Bengaluru Open’s landmark 10th edition. The tournament is scheduled to take place at the S.M. Krishna Tennis Stadium in Bengaluru from January 5 to 11, 2026.

Dhakshineswar has steadily advanced in the professional circuit and earned acclaim from the tennis community for his powerful serve and aggressive style. At 6’5” and 25 years old, he was part of India’s extended Davis Cup World Group I squad in 2024. He made a notable debut in September 2025 against Switzerland, where he defeated a higher-ranked Swiss player, Jérome Kym, 7–6(4), 6–3. This win helped India secure an early lead and contributed to their historic 3–1 victory on Swiss soil.

Speaking on the occasion, Dhakshineswar expressed, “It’s a proud moment for me to compete at the Bengaluru Open ATP Challenger, especially in front of my home crowd. This tournament has consistently provided Indian players a world-class platform to test themselves against top international competition, and it’s been an amazing effort by the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association. I’m grateful for the opportunity and the support, and I look forward to giving my best on court. I hope to see Bengaluru fans cheering for me.”

The Bengaluru Open is returning this year as an ATP Challenger 125 event, offering a total prize pool of over USD 225,000 and awarding 125 ATP ranking points to the singles winner. Wild card Dhakshineswar is in a strong position, having achieved a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 519 in 2025 and demonstrating solid results on both the ITF and ATP Challenger tours. His experience in U.S. college tennis, where he played for prominent programmes at Wake Forest University and Georgia Gwinnett College, will also be advantageous.

Tournament Director and Joint Secretary of KSLTA, Sunil Yajaman, stated, “We are delighted to award a wild card entry into the singles main draw of the Bengaluru Open to Dhakshineshar Suresh. He has shown strong potential and achievements on the tour in the few events he has played and was also instrumental in India’s victory in the Davis Cup against Switzerland. This opportunity reflects our commitment to supporting emerging talent and strengthening the Indian presence in this ATP Challenger event, and we are looking forward to a formidable performance by him. We wish Dhakshineswar Suresh the very best in the competition and hope this helps him make the required jump in his journey.”

Organised by the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA), the Bengaluru Open continues to bolster and develop India’s tennis ecosystem. Over time, the tournament has given Indian players vital exposure to top-tier international competition right at home. In this edition, Dhakshineswar will have the chance to showcase his talent on the big stage, alongside fellow Indian players Sumit Nagal and Aryan Shah.

  • Harsha Deshpande clinches double title at GSTA State Ranking Tennis Tournament

Harsha Deshpande clinches double title at GSTA State Ranking Tennis Tournament

Emerging tennis star Harsha Deshpande made a remarkable showing in the Gujarat State Tennis Association (GSTA) State Ranking Tennis Tournament, securing a double victory by claiming the Girls’ Under-14 and Girls’ Under-16 Singles titles.

Outstanding Performance at SRAG Tennis Academy

Harsha, a Grade VII student, has been training at the Adani Sportsline Academy since 2024. She demonstrated maturity, steadiness, and tactical awareness beyond her years in both age groups of the event that took place at the SRAG Tennis Academy in Ahmedabad from December 20 to 23, 2025.

In the Girls’ Under-14 draw, Harsha defeated Jena Shah 6–1 in the quarterfinals, then bested Reona Pancholi 6–3 in the semifinals, and clinched the title with a 7–3 victory over Zia Thakkar in the final. She carried that momentum into the Girls’ Under-16 category, achieving dominant wins against Jiya Hada (6–0) in the quarterfinals and Pahel Mehta (6–1) in the semifinals, before beating Sarah Rias 7–3 in the final.

    A Successful Domestic Season

The double triumph marked a successful domestic season for Harsha, who also secured her first Girls Under-14 Singles title at the All India Championship Series (7) Tennis Tournament in August 2025. Her performances this year demonstrate consistent improvement across various age groups and increased confidence in competitive matches.

Harsha’s growth is fostered by Adani Sportsline Academy’s structured training system, which emphasizes technical skill, physical fitness, mental resilience, and sustainable athlete development. The academy is dedicated to nurturing young talent through expert coaching and competitive exposure, reaffirming its goal to develop India’s future high-performance athletes.

    Collaboration for Grassroots Development

Harsha’s victories highlight a strong domestic season and consistent progress on the junior circuit, underscoring Adani Sportsline Academy’s commitment to structured, long-term athlete development. Earlier this year, the Gujarat State Tennis Association (GSTA) entered into a collaboration with Tennis Premier League (TPL), which recently concluded its seventh season. Both organizations pledged their support to grassroots development programs in the state. The TPL announced this initiative as part of the nationwide Race to Gold (RTG) project, aimed at discovering India’s tennis talents and providing them with scholarships to further their careers.

“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named District as the official ticketing agency for the fourth edition of the exciting TATA WPL. Tickets can be purchased from the official WPL website, WPL app on Android and iOS, and also on the District website,” the BCCI mentioned.

Navi Mumbai will host 11 matches until January 17, after which the action will transition to Vadodara for the remaining 11 fixtures, including the playoffs.

Gujarat Giants will kick off the Vadodara leg with a match against RCB, followed by a rematch of the 2025 final between Delhi Capitals, led by Jemimah Rodrigues, and Mumbai Inddigihunt. Once the league stage concludes on February 1, the Eliminator, featuring the second- and third-placed teams, will take place on February 3. The top team will advance directly to the final, scheduled for February 5.

    New Schedule Format

This season marks the first time the WPL is being conducted in the January-February window, avoiding overlaps with major women’s international cricket fixtures after three seasons were held in the February-March timeframe.

    Team Highlights

Two-time winners Mumbai Inddigihunt enter as defending champions, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the only other team to have lifted the WPL trophy. Delhi Capitals have finished as runners-up three times, with Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz yet to make it to a final.

The upcoming 2026 season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is the fourth edition of the event, which began in 2023. The Mumbai Inddigihunt Women remain the most successful team, having won two titles in three years, while the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is the other team to have claimed the WPL title.

  • Shreyas Iyer to be assessed at CoE after returning to batting following spleen injury recovery

Shreyas Iyer to be assessed at CoE after returning to batting following spleen injury recovery

India batter Shreyas Iyer will be reporting to the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru for further assessment of his recovery from a spleen injury, having resumed batting practice in his hometown Mumbai.

    ### Injury Details

Iyer, India’s ODI vice-captain, sustained a serious spleen laceration while attempting to take a diving catch of Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25. Subsequent scans at a hospital in Sydney revealed internal bleeding, necessitating immediate hospitalization and intensive care.

He underwent a minor surgical procedure to control the bleeding and was closely monitored by local medical specialists in Australia and India, including the Indian team doctor, before his condition improved and he was able to return home.

    ### CoE Assessment

“Today, Iyer will report to CoE, as he flew to Bengaluru from Mumbai earlier in the day. As of now, there’s no clarity on how many days he will spend there. It might take about four to six days for the medical team to assess him thoroughly,” sources familiar with the matter indicated.

“After that, the CoE will decide the further course of action and set clear timelines in terms of his total recovery and likelihood of being match fit,” sources added.

    ### Recent Progress

The encouraging aspect is that Iyer batted for around 30-45 minutes at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) nets in Mumbai after starting lightweight gym training nearly ten days ago. “Even after batting yesterday, he was reported to be okay and has been feeling better about himself. There were no indications of pain or anything else,” another source monitoring Iyer’s recovery noted.

    ### Future Participation

Iyer’s participation in India’s three ODIs against New Zealand in January appears uncertain at this stage. However, the possibility of his involvement in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) for Mumbai will rely entirely on the findings from the CoE assessment.

“If it’s felt that his total recovery requires more time, then Iyer can be advised to return for another assessment after either 10 days or one week. If he’s deemed match fit after that, he could play Vijay Hazare Trophy matches for Mumbai. But if that doesn’t materialize, he might head straight into IPL 2026, where he captains Punjab Kings,” sources further elaborated.

  • Jeev Milkha Singh breaks 13-year title drought with IGPL win in Colombo; Pukhraj claims Order of Merit

Jeev Milkha Singh breaks 13-year title drought with IGPL win in Colombo; Pukhraj claims Order of Merit

India’s golf legend Jeev Milkha Singh capped off the inaugural season of the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL) with an impressive victory at the IGPL Invitational Sri Lanka, the final event of the season.

Jeev, who hasn’t won a professional event since 2012, showcased his skill at the Royal Colombo Golf Course during this pivotal event. After a modest second day, he dedicated nearly thirty minutes to practice on the putting green. This focus paid off as he delivered exceptional putting performance coupled with outstanding iron play, hitting his approaches within 5-10 feet. At one point, he achieved five birdies in a row, totaling seven birdies within nine holes from the sixth to the 14th.

Beginning two shots behind Aryan Roopa Anand, Jeev, who celebrated his 54th birthday ten days prior, posted a closing round of 6-under 65 for a total score of 15-under, securing victory by one shot. Aryan, who scored a 68, needed to eagle the Par-4 18th hole to force a playoff but managed only a birdie, finishing at 14-under.

As Jeev celebrated his first IGPL title, Pukhraj Singh Gill, despite finishing tied for 12th, clinched the IGPL Order of Merit by a razor-thin margin over Aman Raj and Gaganjeet Bhullar. After 11 events with a prize purse of Rs. 1.5 crore and Rs. 22.50 lakh for the winner, Pukhraj finished less than Rs. 9,000 ahead of Aman Raj.

An emotional Jeev was surrounded by friends after his win, expressing both physical and emotional exhaustion. “I had never played in Sri Lanka before. It is an emotional moment for me. Because this is where my parents fell in love and began their relationship. My mother played volleyball, and my father was here for athletics. So, this is where their journey together began,” he shared, wiping away tears.

He reflected, “We lost them in 2021, and I lost my will to play, but a little later in 2022, I decided I would play for them and win. I hope today’s win will put a smile on their faces,” looking up towards the clear blue skies.

Jeev praised the course and the event’s team, stating, “The Royal Colombo Golf Course was amazing, and the whole team here did a great job, as did the IGPL team.”

His son, Harjai, participated as one of the amateur players, while Jeev’s wife, Kudrat, watched from the sidelines, having recently accompanied her son to junior and amateur events. Harjai finished tied for 22nd.

Uttam Singh Mundy, CEO of the IGPL, presented the trophy to Jeev and adorned him with the IGPL jacket, stating, “The IGPL could not have hoped for a better winner to end the season than Jeev Milkha Singh, a legend of the game worldwide. It was an amazing three days of display, and Jeev showed the youngsters, many of whom may not have even begun the sport when he last won at the 2012 Scottish Open, that he is indeed a champion for all time.” He added, “At the IGPL, we are proud that Jeev has put a stamp on it with such a splendid win.”

Jeev’s last professional victory was at the 2012 Scottish Open. Over his career, he has secured four wins on the European Tour, four on the Japan Tour, and six on the Asian Tour, with one of the Asian Tour victories co-sanctioned by the European Tour.

Jyoti Randhawa, who has competed alongside Jeev on various tours for over two decades, also made his IGPL debut in Colombo. He praised his friend, saying, “Jeev is an amazing player. I have been privileged to see him for so many years. His hunger and love for the game are still the same, and he has always wanted to win, as he showed that even today. He is an inspiration for everyone.” Randhawa’s son, Zoravar, played this week as an amateur, and both father and son finished tied for 24th.

Jeev had a rocky start, dropping a shot on the first hole, which he quickly rectified with a birdie on the second. After two pars, he dropped another shot on the fifth, but then exploded with five consecutive birdies from the sixth to the tenth, taking the lead and never looking back. He added two more birdies on the 12th and 14th holes, allowing him to finish with four pars to secure the win. Jeev’s victory marks a significant milestone, potentially making him the oldest winner on a professional tour, giving the IGPL a strong conclusion in its inaugural year.

Karandeep Kochhar, who has already secured his 2026 Asian Tour berth by finishing second on the Asian Development Tour, placed third with a score of 12-under after a round of 65. SSP Chawrasia finished fourth at 11-under after a late bogey (69), while Gaganjeet Bhullar, who began the IGPL Tour with two wins and added another in his third event, secured fifth place at 10-under.

Local amateur Kaya Daluwatte, who had a three-shot lead at one point in the third round, finished sixth at 9-under after shooting even par.

Veer Ganapathy, one of the standout players from the inaugural IGPL season, finished seventh with a score of nine-under, having shot under par on all three days.

Four players, including Aman Raj (71), who was in contention for the IGPL Order of Merit, finished tied for eighth at 8-under with Raghav Chugh (63), Pranavi Urs (66), and Kapil Kumar (68). Pranavi, winner of the IGPL Mumbai, was the top female finisher at tied for eighth.

Pukhraj (67), who celebrated his maiden professional win at IGPL Jamshedpur, missed a 4-foot birdie on his final hole to finish tied for 12th with Chiragh Kumar (72).

Nonetheless, that performance was sufficient for him to win the IGPL Order of Merit by a slim margin, earning Rs. 81,90,652, while Aman Raj, who enjoyed two victories this season, finished with Rs. 81,81,708.54—less than Rs. 9,000 shy of first place.

Gill will enjoy benefits that include a spot in the USD 2 million International Series in India early next year, as well as a position in an event with Open Qualifying berths on the Asian Tour.

Gaganjeet Bhullar, who triumphed in his first three starts, earned Rs. 81,30,000, finishing third in the Order of Merit. Pranavi Urs, with Rs. 34,84,687, was the top woman professional earner of the season.

  • Rashid: Last year’s pressure was greater as SA20 opener approaches

Rashid: Last year’s pressure was greater as SA20 opener approaches

MI Cape Town captain Rashid Khan stated that his team faces less pressure in the upcoming SA20 season starting on Friday, following their trophy victory in the previous edition of the competition.

    Title Defence Begins

The defending champions return to Newlands on Friday, aiming to kick off their title defence against a revamped Durban’s Super Giants (DSG). Alongside Rashid, the team features Proteas stars Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, and Corbin Bosch, as well as Trent Boult and new recruit Nicholas Pooran.

    Confidence from Previous Victory

“There was more pressure last year than this year, you know we came at the bottom twice in a row and to come up from that and win the trophy was a big thing for us as a team. I think what we did right was we played collectively as a team and we took the responsibility at certain points of the game,” Rashid said in a SA20 release ahead of the opening match.

He also expressed confidence in Pooran’s impact on the team. “He (Pooran) is going to bring lots of energy to the game. We know how dangerous and how good a cricketer he is. He is a kind of a person who comes in smashing lots of sixes; you will see. He’s a guy full of energy and entertainment, and I am sure he is going to love his time here.”

    New Leadership for DSG

Meanwhile, DSG has appointed Aiden Markram as their new captain. Markram has won the competition twice previously with Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) and brings a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to Lance Klusener’s coached team.

DSG also boasts a star-studded squad including England’s 2022 T20 World Cup-winning captain Jos Buttler, New Zealand batter Kane Williamson, and former Proteas white-ball big-hitter Heinrich Klaasen.

Although West Indies off-spin all-rounder Sunil Narine is currently unavailable, DSG has strengthened their spinning department by recruiting Proteas Test hero Simon Harmer, who joins Afghanistan mystery bowler Noor Ahmad.

    Building Team Identity

“There is a really nice balance in the setup, and we have a nice group of guys. We have some really good all-rounders, mixed with 2-3 world-class players like Buttler, Klaasen, and co. I think a lot of it comes down to finding our strength as a team and our identity and what gives us the best chance to play good cricket and win games, so it’s obviously a new and exciting challenge for us in a competition with a lot of new faces,” said Markram.

  • Pathan praises Kohli and Rohit for their outstanding performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy

Pathan praises Kohli and Rohit for their outstanding performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy

Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan was impressed with the performances of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, as both players scored centuries for their respective teams on Wednesday.

Rohit, representing Mumbai, scored a match-winning 155 against Sikkim on the tournament’s opening day. Meanwhile, Kohli contributed significantly by scoring 131 runs, leading Delhi to a four-wicket victory over Andhra Pradesh. Pathan expressed on X, “Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma lighting up domestic cricket. It’s a lifetime experience for young domestic cricketers to share the dressing room with them and learn so much. Absolutely loving this phase of Indian cricket.”

The first half of the Vijay Hazare Trophy’s opening day featured record-breaking centuries, but Rohit and Kohli captured the spotlight in the latter half, both notching up centuries upon their return to the prestigious one-day domestic tournament. Rohit reached his century in just 62 balls, while Kohli followed with a swift century off 83 balls, showcasing their dominance.

This marked a notable return for Rohit to domestic cricket, as he scored a century in his first Vijay Hazare Trophy match in seven years for Mumbai. Kohli showcased his usual style while leading the run chase, reaching an impressive hundred. This achievement marked his 58th List A century and the third in four innings since the South Africa series earlier this month.

With his first run of the innings, Kohli joined an elite group as the ninth player to reach 16,000 List A runs, accumulating over 14,000 runs for India since his debut in 2008. During the match, he further solidified his place in cricket history by achieving a total of 16,000 List A runs. Kohli’s milestone makes him only the second Indian to reach this feat in List A cricket, following Sachin Tendulkar.

At 37 years old, Kohli now ranks as the ninth player overall to surpass this mark, joining legends like Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara, and Sir Vivian Richards.

  • WPL 2026: Anagha Deshpande, former India player, joins Delhi Capitals as assistant coach

WPL 2026: Anagha Deshpande, former India player, joins Delhi Capitals as assistant coach

Ahead of the 2026 season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), former India cricketer Anagha Deshpande has joined three-time runners-up Delhi Capitals (DC) as an assistant coach.

Anagha’s coaching responsibilities will focus on fielding and batting within the DC setup. “Yes, I am joining the Delhi Capitals. It was finalised a few days ago. Hundred percent, it’s a great opportunity for me. I will get to learn a lot of things which will aid me in future. I have seen them try for winning a trophy for three years. I hope I can help them win the trophy this time,” Anagha stated.

At DC, Anagha will work alongside head coach Jonathan Batty. Her appointment follows the departure of Lisa Keightley, who has joined Mumbai Inddigihunt as head coach, and Milap Mewada, who is now coaching Goa’s men’s team in the ongoing domestic season.

Anagha played 23 ODIs and eight T20Is for India between 2008 and 2014, accumulating 483 runs across both formats. As a wicketkeeper, she took 16 catches and executed 21 stumpings in white-ball cricket for India. In domestic cricket, she represented Maharashtra, Railways, Gujarat, and Puducherry.

Since retiring as a player, Anagha has achieved notable success as a coach in Uttarakhand. She led the state’s U19 women’s team to one-day trophy titles in 2021/22 and 2022/23, while guiding the U23 side to knockout stages in T20 and one-day championships in 2023/24 and 2024/25.

Under Anagha’s leadership, Uttarakhand reached their first senior women’s finals in both T20 and one-day formats in 2023/24. Players like Nandini Kashyap, Raghvi Bist, and Prema Rawat, all of whom participated in this year’s WPL and India A teams, credit their growth to Anagha’s coaching.

She has also coached various senior and U19 women’s challenger trophies and has taken part in different assignments at zonal and national levels for camps organized by the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE).

DC will kick off their 2026 WPL campaign on January 10 against defending champions Mumbai Inddigihunt at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Recently, India batter Jemimah Rodrigues was appointed as DC’s new captain, a decision backed by Anagha. “I have seen her leadership. She is well deserving to be the captain. I have seen her lead Mumbai. The way her nature is in terms of leading a team, there is no need for a tag to say that she is a leader. She plays in the same way as a player and now that she has a leadership tag, she is hundred percent well deserving of it,” she remarked.

Additionally, it is understood that former India captain Anju Jain is likely to be appointed as DC’s batting coach. Anju played eight Tests and 65 ODIs for India from 1993 to 2005, scoring a total of 2,170 runs.

In Tests, she notched up one century and three fifties, while taking 15 catches and effecting eight stumpings. In ODIs, she contributed with 30 catches and 51 stumpings.

Anju previously served as assistant coach of UP Warriorz (UPW) in the first two seasons of the WPL and was the head coach of Tornadoes at the FairBreak Global Invitational tournament. She has also coached the Indian team and held the position of chairman of the women’s selection committee.

Furthermore, Anju has been the head coach of the Bangladesh women’s team and worked in the same capacity with Odisha, Vidarbha, Assam, Tripura, and Baroda teams in the domestic circuit.
