  • Iga Swiatek: Women’s Tennis Can Thrive Without ‘Battle of Sexes’

Iga Swiatek: Women’s Tennis Can Thrive Without ‘Battle of Sexes’

Six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek has downplayed the significance of the “Battle of the Sexes” event, which was heavily promoted during the 1973 tour, indicating that it represented only half of the overall women’s tennis.

Swiatek pointed out that while many consider it one of the top events in tennis history, women in tennis have nothing to prove on a global scale and should not be measured against men’s tennis.

“I haven’t watched because I don’t watch stuff like that,” Swiatek said during a press conference. “I think for sure it attracted a lot of attention. It was entertainment, but I wouldn’t say that had anything to do with social change or any important topics.”

Currently ranked No. 2 in the world and participating in the United Cup in Sydney, Swiatek emphasized that the mixed team event is a far more meaningful way to celebrate women’s tennis. The match between Aryna Sabalenka, the world No. 1 in women’s singles tennis, and Nick Kyrgios, the Australian entertainer, has been likened to the famous battle between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs in 1973.

Kyrgios defeated Sabalenka 6-3, 6-3, reducing the size of his side of the court by nine percent to counteract Sabalenka’s strength, speed, and elevation advantage. However, Swiatek felt that such comparisons are invalid. She remarked that the context that made the 1973 match era-defining is no longer relevant. Women’s tennis, according to her, is now a legitimate global professional sport.

“I think the name was just the same as the one from the Billie Jean King match in ’73. That’s it,” she stated. “There were no more similarities because I feel like women’s tennis stands on its own right now. We have so many great athletes and great stories to present; we don’t necessarily need to compare to men’s tennis. Honestly, there doesn’t need to be any competition.”

As she prepares for the Australian Open this month, the only Grand Slam title she has yet to win, she believes that modern formats such as the United Cup more accurately reflect the current state of the game.

“I think actually events like this one, United Cup, bring tennis together, and WTA fans and ATP fans can watch this event with so much excitement,” she commented. “Seeing also singles players that usually don’t have space to play mixed doubles together playing these kinds of matches, I think this is actually what makes our sport much more interesting and better.”

  • Ahmedabad Polo Tournament Begins with Spectacular Opening Ceremony

Ahmedabad Polo Tournament Begins with Spectacular Opening Ceremony

The Ahmedabad Polo Tournament kicked off spectacularly on Friday with a grand opening event, launching three days of competitive polo matches and engaging spectator activities. Organised by the Gujarat Polo Club and supported by the Adani Group, this three-day event is the largest polo festival ever held in Gujarat in terms of size and grandeur.

    Dazzling Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony at the Gujarat Polo Club Ground in Shela featured an energetic dance performance by a large troupe, followed by appearances from the renowned acrobatic dance group V Unbeatable. The tournament trophy was officially unveiled by actor and former Miss World Manushi Chhillar, alongside the team owners, marking the official beginning of the competition. The evening’s scale and production were unmatched for polo in Ahmedabad, attracting a large crowd and a lively response from spectators.

    Exciting Matches Ahead

On the opening day, the Jindal Panthers played against Mayfair Polo in the first match. This was followed by NAV Unicorns competing with Pune Warriors, and KP Kings clashing with Adani Archers in the third encounter. Equestrian sports demonstrations took place between matches, enhancing the traditional sporting atmosphere.

A Vision for Polo in Gujarat

Speaking on the occasion, Arpan Gupta, promoter of Gujarat Polo Club, stated, “This tournament is about bringing polo to Gujarat in a way it has never been experienced before. The response to the opening day has been extremely encouraging and reinforces our belief that Ahmedabad is ready to embrace polo as a major sporting and cultural event.”

    A Competitive Atmosphere

Over 30 polo players are participating in the tournament, with at least 25 having competed internationally. The high level of play on opening day created a competitive atmosphere throughout the event.

    Spectator Experience

The event offers more than just matches; it features a whole spectator experience with heritage installations, horse exhibitions, family zones, and live entertainment throughout the venue. Musical acts will perform for the next two days, culminating in a closing ceremony with synchronised fireworks, laser shows, and an awards presentation.

The Ahmedabad Polo Tournament seeks to revive the “king of games” in Gujarat and create a prominent annual sporting event that connects heritage, culture, and sport.

  • Steve Smith responds to retirement rumors: ‘I feel like I’m doing alright at the moment’

Steve Smith responds to retirement rumors: ‘I feel like I’m doing alright at the moment’

Australian stand-in captain Steve Smith is prepared to relinquish captaincy to a younger candidate in the absence of captain Pat Cummins if that is the wish of the selectors. With Usman Khawaja retiring on Sunday after the Sydney Test and Nathan Lyon ruled out due to injury, Smith becomes the oldest player in the Australian XI, alongside Scott Boland.

When asked about the possibility of being involved in the 2027 Ashes series in England, Smith expressed uncertainty but indicated he is focused on enjoying his cricket in the present moment.

“I’ve said it for a while, I’m taking it day-by-day, series-by-series, and we’ll see where things land,” Smith stated. “I feel like I’m doing alright at the moment, I’m enjoying it, I’m contributing, and having fun. So there’s no real end date for me.”

Regarding Khawaja’s retirement, Smith acknowledged his experience is a loss for the team. “I think with obviously Usman dropping off, he’s one of our experienced players, so it probably wouldn’t be ideal if him and I went out this week, for instance. So no, I want to keep playing.”

Smith has captained during four of Cummins’ Ashes Tests but is comfortable passing the captaincy to a younger player after Khawaja’s departure if the selectors decide. He believes that the sport has become more entertaining due to the positive results from the Australian team.

Following a successful run, Australia is gearing up to compete again for the World Test Championship (WTC) after gaining momentum from recent victories. The loss in Melbourne has motivated the team to secure a win in Sydney before facing tough series against South Africa and India post this series.

“I think we’ve got a really good team,” Smith remarked in the press conference. “The team we’ve had over the last three or four years, obviously making two World Test Championship finals, different people have stood up at different times. It’s never been one or two people just getting the job done. It’s been shared across and guys have done great jobs throughout and I think that’s what’s made us a really good team.”

Smith, now an older player, hopes to mentor the younger players regarding Test cricket. Following dominant wins in Perth and Brisbane, Australia leads 3-1 over England in a five-Test Ashes series. After winning the third Test in Adelaide by 82 runs, England responded with a notable victory in Melbourne, their first on Australian soil in 15 years, clinching the match by four wickets in less than two days.

While Australia has already secured the Ashes, the stakes remain high for both teams due to the points available for the WTC.

“With the World Test Championship, every game is important,” he noted. “Hopefully we can turn it around here, win this series 4-1, and now, more importantly, just win a Test in the World Test Championship cycle.”

Smith has long admired Khawaja’s batting, recalling their early days in U-17 and U-19 cricket. Khawaja held a press conference to announce his retirement, flanked by family, two days ahead of the match as the team gears up to claim another 12 WTC points and aim to finish the series with a 4-1 victory.

“I remember playing against him in a couple of Under-17 versus Under-19 games for New South Wales and watching him bat,” Smith was quoted as saying. “The way he pulled the ball, I was like, this guy picks length up quicker than anyone I’ve seen. He was pulling balls off the top of the stumps. I feel like throughout his career, he’s been batting his best when he’s been doing that as well. And just his progression over a long period of time has been outstanding.”

Khawaja often refers to himself as one of Australia’s most dropped cricketers, having been overlooked from the Test team seven times prior to 2019. Smith, however, views this not as a hindrance but as lessons that forced Khawaja to confront his weaknesses against spin bowling, ultimately enhancing his game.

Before a stellar series against Pakistan in Dubai in 2018, Khawaja had a poor average of 14.62 over five Tests in Asia. Following that series, he emerged as one of cricket’s top players against spin, amassing 1490 runs in 13 Tests at a remarkable average of 82.77.

“He’s arguably one of our best players of spin now. So maybe it was a blessing in disguise. But the way he’s been able to play over his 15-year career… it’s a credit to him and not too many people get to go out on their own terms,” Smith shared.

“I was captain at that stage and we dropped him in the subcontinent. We didn’t think he was playing the spinners as well as he does now. But he got that opportunity to go back and figure out ways to play. Whether he would have done that had he kept playing, I’m not sure. But he went back and found some different methods to defend spin. He was reversing, sweeping, and that’s a mode of defence in a way when you put the field out.”

“He’s arguably one of our best players of spin now. So maybe it was a blessing in disguise. But the way he’s been able to play over his 15-year career… it’s a credit to him and not too many people get to go out on their own terms.”

  • Paarl Royals narrowly defeat MI Cape Town in an exciting SA20 derby match

Paarl Royals narrowly defeat MI Cape Town in an exciting SA20 derby match

Lhuan-dre Pretorius’ SA20 season four burst into life with an unbeaten 98, driving Paarl Royals to a thrilling one-run victory over MI Cape Town in the Western Cape derby at Boland Park.

    Nail-Biting Final Over

Royals’ seamer Ottniel Baartman had 15 runs to defend in the final over. After Kagiso Rabada smashed the third delivery for six over long off, it seemed the momentum had swung MI Cape Town’s way. However, Baartman (4/51) had Rabada caught on the boundary the next ball, reducing MI Cape Town’s equation to needing six off the final delivery for victory. George Linde made good contact, carving a length delivery over the covers, but the ball fell just inches short of the boundary rope, sending the Royals faithful into a frenzy.

    Pretorius Shines

Pretorius had endured a quiet start to the competition in the first couple of matches, but the league’s leading scorer of last season was back at his beloved home ground. The teenager returned to his belligerent best, cracking 10 boundaries and two sixes during his 65-ball stay at the crease. The Royals faithful were urging Pretorius on to a maiden T20 century, but it was not to be, as Rabada delivered a dot ball to close out the Royals innings.

    Player of the Match

The four player of the match candidates were Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Sikandar Raza, Asa Tribe, and Rassie van der Dussen, with Pretorius winning 72% of the fan vote. The visitors were under pressure from the outset, with Pretorius and Asa Tribe dominating the power play. The Royals’ opening pair put on exactly 100 in 10.4 overs before MI Cape Town captain Rashid Khan (2/31) had the Jersey international caught for 51 off 34 balls.

    MI Cape Town’s Response

MI Cape Town enjoyed an equally good start with Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton (36) adding 77 for the first wicket in 7.5 overs. This was before Royals’ new recruit Sikandar Raza (3/27) announced his arrival at SA20. The Zimbabwe international removed both Rickelton and the dangerous Nicholas Pooran and later clean bowled Tom Moores for a first-ball duck, stemming the MI Cape Town tide. However, it was Baartman’s double-wicket over that scuppered MI Cape Town’s momentum, as he picked up both Van der Dussen (59) and Jason Smith (1) within three balls of each other.

  • Sikandar Raza named captain of Zimbabwe’s 15-man squad for Men’s T20 World Cup 2026

Sikandar Raza named captain of Zimbabwe’s 15-man squad for Men’s T20 World Cup 2026

Fit-again fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani is the only addition to the squad that competed in the T20I triangular series in Pakistan last November, which also included Sri Lanka. Muzarabani will lead the pace attack alongside left-arm seamer Richard Ngarava, with Bradley Evans and Tinotenda Maposa adding depth and flexibility to Zimbabwe’s seam-bowling options.

The spin department features experienced players, with veteran Graeme Cremer earning a recall to partner Wellington Masakadza. Zimbabwe’s batting line-up combines youthful promise with proven experience.

    Batting Line-Up

Young batters Brian Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani will be eager to shine on cricket’s biggest stage, while wicketkeeper-batter Brendan Taylor offers a wealth of experience and stability to the top order. All-rounder Ryan Burl contributes balance with his power-hitting and leg-spin. Tashinga Musekiwa, Clive Madande, Tony Munyonga, and Dion Myers complete a versatile and well-rounded squad.

    Group Stage Fixtures

Zimbabwe has been placed in Group B, where they will face Australia, Ireland, Oman, and co-hosts Sri Lanka. The top two teams from the group will advance to the Super Eight stage of the tournament.

Zimbabwe will kick off their T20 World Cup campaign against Oman at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo on February 9. This will be followed by a high-profile match against Australia at the R. Premadasa Stadium on February 13. The team will then make their way to Kandy to take on Ireland at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on February 17, before returning to Colombo to finish their group fixtures against Sri Lanka at the R. Ranchi Royals Win 2-0 Over Soorma Hockey Club in Women’s HIL 2025-26 with Rutuja and Sakshi’s Goals

Rutuja Dadaso Pisal (30′) and Sakshi Rana (54′) scored one goal each as Ranchi Royals defeated Soorma Hockey Club 2-0 in their Women’s Hockey India League (HIL) 2025-26 encounter at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astro Turf Stadium.

    Match Overview

Defences were dominant in the first quarter, with both sides making minimal errors and not providing good chances to their opponents. Ranchi Royals held more possession early on; however, JSW Soorma Hockey Club displayed attacking intent with 10 circle penetrations in the first 15 minutes.

In the 12th minute, Soorma Hockey Club secured the first penalty corner of the evening, but Penny Squibb’s shot was blocked by the first rusher. The Royals had a chance in the 18th minute when Rutuja Dadaso Pisal’s shot was saved by Savita, and Hannah Cotter couldn’t control the rebound, missing a good opportunity.

In the 25th minute, Ranchi Royals’ Ishika committed a foul inside the circle, resulting in a penalty stroke for JSW Soorma Hockey Club. However, Penny Squibb was denied as Ranchi’s Madhuri Kindo made a brilliant save. Soorma won another penalty corner soon after but again found the first rusher in their path.

    Key Moments

Just seconds before halftime, Ranchi Royals scored the first goal of the match. Agostina Alonso delivered a powerful pass into the circle from midfield, allowing Rutuja Dadaso Pisal (30′) to showcase her skills by deftly deflecting the ball into the net.

In the opening minutes of the third quarter, Soorma’s Olivia Shannon made an impressive individual effort, winning the ball in a dangerous area and firing a back-handed shot, which was saved by Ranchi Royals’ Bichu Devi Kharibam.

Maria Ortiz came close to doubling the Royals’ advantage in the 34th minute, beating her marker and unleashing a low shot that hit the post. With just two seconds left in the quarter, Ranchi Royals earned another penalty corner, but the ball was not effectively trapped, leading to a missed opportunity.

    Final Stretch

In the 54th minute, Ranchi Royals extended their lead with another impressive field goal. Sakshi Rana (54′) struck the ball powerfully from a tight angle into the top right corner of the goalpost.

Soorma Hockey Club managed to win a crucial penalty corner in the final minute, but Penny Squibb’s dragflick was expertly denied by Bichu Devi Kharibam, who ended her game with a clean sheet.

  • Chhetri and footballers seek AIFF clarity on ISL restart for owners and fans

Chhetri and footballers seek AIFF clarity on ISL restart for owners and fans

With the future of the Indian Super League (ISL) still uncertain, Indian footballers, alongside international stars, have called upon FIFA, the sport’s global governing body, to intervene and address the ongoing issues surrounding the franchise-based tournament.

Prominent figures in Indian football, such as Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Sandesh Jhingan, and Sunil Chhetri, have publicly appealed to FIFA amidst the crisis faced by the sport in the country.

“It’s January, and we should be on your screens as a part of a competitive football game in the Indian Super League,” Gurpreet stated in a video featuring other players. “Instead, here we are driven by fear and desperation to say aloud something which we all know,” added Jhingan. “Players, staff, owners, and the fans deserve clarity, protection, and more importantly, a future,” expressed Chhetri.

“We are here to make a plea. The Indian football government is no longer able to fulfil its responsibilities. We are now staring at permanent paralysis. This is the last-ditch effort to save what we can. So we are calling on FIFA to step in and do what it takes to save Indian football. We hope this message gets to the powers that are in Zurich. This call is not political; it is not driven by confrontation but by necessity. It might sound like a big word, but the truth is that we are facing a humanitarian, sporting, and economic crisis. And of course, we need rescuing at the earliest. We just want to play football, please help us do it,” the players stated.

On Thursday, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) received letters from nearly all members of the ISL confirming their willingness to participate in the upcoming 2025-26 season, contingent on satisfactory financial and governance assurances from the AIFF.

The member clubs of the ISL emphasized that their continued participation is conditional upon the AIFF confirming that there are no league Administration Fees and that it will accept full financial responsibility for operational costs arising due to reduced seasons.

Additionally, club members requested that the AIFF provide a clear, timed set of objectives outlining the development of the league’s financial and governance structure over time; they also urged the AIFF to seek funds from the government to support the league.

Earlier, City Football Group (CFG) divested its shareholding in Mumbai City FC, returning the ISL side to full control of its founding owners.

The acquisition of a 65% stake in Mumbai City FC in November 2019 by the Manchester City-owning conglomerate marked a significant milestone in ambition, professionalism, and the globalisation of the club, which achieved notable success during its six-year partnership with CFG.

  • Sri Lanka Cricket to introduce Day-Night Tests at SSC, according to reports

Sri Lanka Cricket to introduce Day-Night Tests at SSC, according to reports

India could be playing a Pink Ball Day/Night Test when they visit Sri Lanka for a long-form series next time. Sri Lanka Cricket is laying the groundwork for a new chapter in the island’s cricketing history, with plans to stage Day-Night Test matches at the historic Sinhalese Sports Club ground in Colombo.

The installation of floodlights at the Sinhalese Sports Club has now been completed. SLC Treasurer Sujeewa Godaliyadda stated that the project goes well beyond the immediate demands of the upcoming T20 World Cup, according to a report.

SLC has funded the floodlight project for Rs. 1.8 billion as the SSC is set to host five matches of the showpiece event. The other venues for the tournament will be the Pallekele International Stadium and the R. Premadasa Stadium.

During a media tour to unveil the project, Godaliyadda mentioned that the long-term vision was for SSC to one day host Day-Night Test matches. While Pink-Ball matches have gained traction globally in recent years, Sri Lanka has yet to stage one at home. Indications suggest that SSC will be the venue for the country’s first-ever Day/Night Test.

The SSC ground will be leased for a certain number of days a year to SLC for conducting training and games, as part of an agreement to develop the ground.

The first phase of development included upgraded dressing rooms and a new VIP viewing area. A second phase, scheduled to begin after the World Cup, will focus on expanding the venue’s capacity. SLC plans to upgrade SSC into a 30,000-seat stadium, a move the board believes will strengthen Sri Lanka’s case when bidding for future ICC events, including women’s and Under-19 tournaments.

The SSC celebrated its 125th anniversary last year and has been the stage for many of Sri Lankan cricket’s defining moments. The ground hosted matches during the 1996 World Cup and was the scene of the world-record partnership of 624 runs between Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene against South Africa in 2006.

Alongside SSC, the Colombo Cricket Club Ground, just across the road, and the P. Sara Oval are also undergoing upgrades. SLC is continuing its plans to build a new international-standard cricket ground in Jaffna and has identified several other locations for future venues, as demand for international facilities continues to grow.

UPKL Season 2: Ritik Sharma makes history as Yamuna Yoddhas win against JD Noida Ninjas in shootout

In a contest that will be remembered as one of the most intense matches of the tournament, Yamuna Yoddhas defeated JD Noida Ninjas in the second tie-breaker of the season after the teams were locked 42–42 at the end of regulation time in the first match on Day 9 of the Uttar Pradesh Kabaddi League (UPKL) Season 2 at the Noida Stadium.

    Match Overview

From the opening exchanges, the match unfolded as a high-quality battle of equals. Both teams responded raid for raid, super raid for super raid, and all-out for all-out. Neither side allowed the other to establish control, keeping the contest finely balanced throughout.
