  • Steam inhalation: Beneficial or Just a Myth?

Steam inhalation: Beneficial or Just a Myth?

Steam inhalation is one of the home remedies where there is the inhalation of water vapor done. Also called as steam therapy, it is often used to get relief from cold, coughs, and sinus issues.

It may provide relief but it’s important to also take care especially with children as it is hot water we are dealing with! Side effects like scalding and burns can occur if not careful.

Some benefits claimed of steam therapy are:

Steam inhalation was seen to provide atleast temporarily relief from:

    • Headaches
    • Blocked nose
    • Coughs
    • Breathing issues
    • Fever
    • Common cold
    • Bronchitis
    • Sinusitis

It is important to note though that steam inhalation may not necessarily cure the disease but may provide temporary relief whereas in some people it may not show any effect either. In a study conducted in England, 871 patients were asked to undergo steam inhalation. All the subjects suffered from sinusitis. After 6 months follow up, there was no improvement seen in subjects.

According to a 2012 study by Baartmans, it was seen that steam therapy was extremely dangerous for young children as they suffered from burns especially in the lower part of the body specifically the abdomen, and thus was not recommended by the researchers in the study. A study conducted in May 15 this year also supported this claim. The researchers surveyed burns services across England and found 50% of centers had an increase in scalds relating to steam inhalation.

It is important to note that the above studies have been conducted in western countries and not in India. In an Indian study published in July 2020, beneficial effects of steam inhalation were seen in Covid-19 patients as symptoms improved and there were less rates of transmission seen, though it has to be kept in mind that this was an observational study.

Hence the take-home message is that it is important to take care while proceeding with inhalation. More studies need to be conducted on the effects of steam inhalation. It definitely does provide temporary relief, though if discomfort is experienced, it is necessary to stop it.

“Stretching or flexibility should be a part of a regular program,”

    Millar

Stretches can be done anytime. Be it before you wake up or before bed. Or it may be before you go to exercise or work.

    3 BEST MUSCLE STRETCHES

Here are 3 BEST MUSCLE STRETCHES exercises follows :

    Warriors pose

It’s actually a form of yoga termed as ‘Virabhadrasana’. This pose is a stable yoga posture that helps create focus, strength and stability. This facial pose stretches to the front of the body and is great for creating strength in the legs, core and back.

To do warrior pose, first stand wwith both legs together. Then move backwards with your right foot to your right. Try to bend your butt so that your front knee goes straight over your left leg, bending about 90-degrees. And rotate your upper body so that your hips and shoulders are straight forward. You can then try to spread your legs slightly from each other as much as you can. Now gently raise your hand above your head and deepen the extension a little with each breath. Now breathe in and straighten your legs to get relief from the posture.

But apart from these, there are many more modifications for warrior pose. Picture follows.

    Cobra pose

In yoga terms, it is known as Bhujangasana. This cobra pose is a backband, it stretches from the chest and lungs to the shoulders and lower abdomen. It opens the heart and lungs and can help you breathe more freely.

Lie on your stomach then place your hands on the floor just behind the shoulders. Slowly lift your navel and start pulling your hands against ground. Lift your chest up and up, straighten your arms as much as possible without straining your back. For newcomers such as straightening arm all the way can be tough. Try to work with your breathing to get deeper. Extend the breath as you press your hands, straighten your arms slightly and lift your chest. As soon as you exhale, straighten your legs and feet and reach behind your tailbone. Take another full breath and stick your tongue out as you exhale and flutter your breath towards the sky! Roll gently and take a breath in your stomach, then press back to lie on your tummy.

    Wheel pose

This posture has added seats as a chakrasana or Urdhva Dhanurasana. It is a backband and the first texture of the finishing sequence in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. It gives great flexibility to the spine. It also presents in acrobatics and gymnastics. There this body position is called the bridge.

This pose is quite tough. But after achieving it you can feel a ease on your body. So must give it a try.
For first, lie on your back. Then bend your knees and bring foot inward so they’re touching your bump. Keep your feet flat on the ground. In next, bend your elbows and bring your hands up beside your ears. Then place your palms flat on the ground with your fingers facing your toes. Now try to push yourself up ( you have to put pressure on your legs to keep your body up). As your body comes off the ground, round your back so that your body forms a semi-circle. Straighten your elbows without locking them, and keep your knees slightly bent. And focus your glaze in between your hands. Now keep yourself relax in this position. Now, before letting yourself down first keep your botton on ground first.

Even in your most busiest schedule atleast try these yoga stretches. Your body will be more relaxed and muscle will be much flexible.

  • What are Food Colorings? Natural Food and Artificial Food Coloring

What are Food Colorings? Natural Food and Artificial Food Coloring

Food colorings: Food colorants are dyes, pigments or additives added to foods. It is often added to processed drinks, condiments, medicinal drugs and cosmetics. The FSSAI ensures approval of the additives in order to ensure that it can be safe for consumption.

Food colorants can be of two types: Natural and artificial food colorings

Some of the natural food colorings include:

    • Lycopene (obtained from tomatoes)
    • Anthocyanin- This consists of reddish purple to bluish in colour.
    • Turmeric
    • Beta carotene- It has red orangish colour
    • Caramel- Dark brown liquid obtained by heating sugars.
    • Betanin-obtained from beetroots.

Some of the artificial food colorings include:

    • Quinolone yellow: It is a water soluble dye
    • Erythrosine: It is pinkish colored dye often used in cakes and candies.
    • Tartrazine: A lemon yellow colored dye, used in candies, soft drinks and deserts.
    • Sunset yellow: It is a yellow-orange dye used in baked goods and sauces.
    • Brilliant blue: It is used in icings, soft drinks and canned foods.

Can synthetic food colorants cause ADHD/hyperactivity?

There is no official evidence regarding the same though a few studies connect ADHD with food colorants use.  In a study conducted by Belinda Bateman in 2004, there was association seen between  artificial food colorings and benzoate preservatives on the behaviour of 3 year old children. A study conducted in 1978 by JP Harley though, found no associations between food colorings and hyperactivity. Yet another study conducted by KS Rowe on 800 children found that about 24 children exhibited irritability, restlessness and sleep disturbance.

Hence through this studies, we can conclude that there is a small but significant association between hyperactivity and food colourants, though more research needs to be conducted in this area.

There are also certain researches linking consumption of artificial food dyes to cancer and allergies, though more research needs to be conducted in this area.

Eating whole, unprocessed foods must be the utmost priority as they are dye free and it is also best to read food labels before its consumption.

A lot of Vitamin C is used up during stress periods and hence it is important to replenish our body with this vitamin. It is also quite sensitive to air and heat as well due to which foods containing this vitamin must not be kept out for long and must be immediately consumed.

    Vitamin D:

This vitamin is seen to be deficient in majority of indians due to lowered exposure to sunlight, clothes majorly covering our body, dark complexion and usage of creams that block UV-rays exposure. It is also not much available in foods except for non-vegetarian food items like liver, eggs, fishes like salmon, tuna, etc but is not bioavailable. There are a lot of researches done on this vitamin and its connection to immunity. According to a study conducted in 2010 by Baeke et al, deficiency of Vitamin D has been associated with increased risk of autoimmune diseases like Type 1 Diabetes and also in infectious diseases like Tuberculosis. Another study conducted in 2020, also hypothesizes a protective role of Vitamin D against covid-19.

    Vitamin A:
