Adivi Sesh has included the iconic 90s hit ‘Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast,’ originally from the Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon-starrer, in his upcoming film “Dacoit.” This choice is not merely creative but deeply personal, resonating with cherished childhood memories.
A Nostalgic Decision
When conceptualizing the teaser for “Dacoit,” Sesh was determined to evocate a sense of nostalgia. He took the proactive step to legally acquire the rights to the song, allowing him to relive a significant part of his youth.
Sesh shared, “There are certain songs that become a part of who you are, and ‘Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast’ has always been one of those for me. As a kid in the 90s, this track was impossible to escape, and I was completely drawn to it.”
He reminisced about his first school performance, saying, “It featured in the very first time I ever performed on stage as part of a dance medley, and that memory has stayed with me all these years.”
About the Song and Film
The song is from the 1994 action thriller “Mohra,” directed by Rajiv Rai, and stars renowned actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Raveena Tandon, Poonam Jhawer, Raza Murad, Paresh Rawal, Gulshan Grover, and Sadashiv Amrapurkar. The film was reported to be inspired by the 1987 movie “Death Wish 4: The Crackdown,” with the climax drawing inspiration from the 1992 Hong Kong film “Hard Boiled.”
While developing “Dacoit,” Sesh felt an instinctive urge to infuse the film with that emotional resonance. He expressed, “Not as a novelty, but as something honest and instinctive. Including the song was my way of acknowledging that younger version of myself who discovered the excitement of music, performance, and connecting with an audience.”
Personal Significance
Sesh emphasized the importance of securing the rights, stating, “This wasn’t just a creative decision; it was a personal one. It’s a small fragment of my past that now lives within the film, and I hope it evokes the same nostalgia and energy for viewers when they hear it.”
“Dacoit” also features a talented cast, including Mrunal Thakur, Prakash Raj, Sunil, Atul Kulkarni, Zayn Marie Khan, and Kamakshi Bhaskarla. The film narrates the journey of an angry convict seeking revenge on his ex-girlfriend for her betrayal. As he devises a risky plan to ensnare her, the narrative evolves into an emotionally charged tale of love, betrayal, and vengeance.
Shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu, the story and screenplay of “Dacoit” have been collaboratively crafted by Adivi Sesh and Shaneil Deo. The film is currently in post-production and is set for a grand pan-India release.
