  • Zeenat Aman on Transforming Her Image: The Impact of ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’

Zeenat Aman on Transforming Her Image: The Impact of ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’

At a time when screens demanded perfection from their leading ladies, Zeenat Aman stepped into her role in “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” with a half-disfigured face and complete conviction. As she celebrates her 74th birthday, the original diva clarifies that her choice was not about defiance or symbolism; rather, she simply wanted to embrace a role that deviated from her long-held “westernised” image.

    Defying Beauty Norms in Cinema

Reflecting on Hindi cinema from the 1970s and 1980s, beauty was generally associated with flawless perfection. However, a few exceptional actresses like Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, Rekha, and Zeenat Aman brought a unique presence to the screen.

In an exclusive conversation, Zeenat Aman revealed that she never approached her role with the deep thematic analysis that audiences often attribute to it today. She stated, “I mean, there was no such heavy-duty analysis. Nothing like that. No. It’s just that I loved to have had the opportunity to play this part with such a great filmmaker like Raj Kapoor.”

    Heart of the Story

Directed by Raj Kapoor, “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” explores the contrasts between physical and spiritual love. The narrative revolves around Shashi Kapoor’s character Rajeev, who falls in love with Roopa, portrayed by Zeenat Aman, a beautiful singer concealing her facial disfigurement. After marriage, Rajeev discovers her secret and begins to overlook her.

Zeenat added, “Because I had been typecast in a very westernised kind of image, it was a challenge for me to play something so different. So, yeah, I wanted to do it, and I did it, and my director said, ‘Shed your inhibitions and just be in every aspect of this character.’ And I tried.”

    Recent Endeavors

In addition to her cinematic achievements, Zeenat Aman is currently involved in narrating a compelling 10-part documentary series titled “Embers of Hope: The Fight for Our Future” for the Discovery Channel. This series, produced by Mobius Foundation and Warner Bros. Discovery, began airing on November 16, with new episodes available every Sunday at 7.30 p.m. on Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.

    Belief in Filmmaking Magic

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Liu expressed, “It’s better to come from a place of excitement. Cherishing the Journey

Reflecting on her early years in the industry, she added, “That momentum that I had as a 19- or 20-year-old when I started, not knowing everything else was a beautiful thing. That’s the combustion of starting out; the accelerator is really the beauty of it. You don’t want it to be tainted too soon.”

    Commitment to Film

Liu starred alongside Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore in the 2000 film “Charlie’s Angels.” While her co-stars ventured into different pursuits over the years, Liu has consistently remained committed to her film career, as noted by femalefirst.co.uk.

    Reflections on Co-Stars

Speaking about her co-stars, she mentioned, “Cameron retired for a while, and her ability to light up a room is like nobody else’s. Drew has gone down this new path to connect with people — she’s always been a people person, and now she has a talk show that’s incredibly successful. But I’ve just stayed on this path. This is the path that I choose.”

    Best Advice from Helen Mirren
