Director Tom Gormican and Co-Writer Kevin Etten recently discussed the new installment of the “Anaconda” franchise, sharing their unique perspective on the film’s creative direction.
A Fresh Take on a Cult Classic
While reflecting on the filming process, Gormican and Etten emphasized that they did not consider themselves right for a traditional remake of the beloved 1997 cult classic, Anaconda. Etten recalled, “Tom and I felt we were not the guys for a traditional updating of Anaconda. But the more we thought about it, we realized there was an opportunity to have fun with it.”
They recognized the potential to blend humor with horror, aiming to create comedic moments while also scaring the audience. “We focused on giving the audience a fun ride and not letting them off it,” Etten stated.
The Merciless Amazon as a Setting
The unforgiving Amazon rainforest serves as the perfect backdrop for combining fright and laughter. Gormican pointed out, “It was a long process to arrive at a tone that satisfied our appetite for each genre we attempted to blend. But as always, we relied on great actors to help us bridge the gaps.”
By portraying the characters’ serious approach to their dangerous surroundings, the film seeks to create genuine stakes, while their unpreparedness for the jungle adds a humorous twist.
