Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey has addressed the possibility of running for the governor of Texas, but he is currently focused on his family priorities.
The actor has not dismissed the idea of pursuing a political career, though his familial responsibilities require his attention, as reported by ‘People’ magazine.
When questioned about his interest in a political future, particularly regarding the governor’s seat in Texas, he reflected, “I don’t know. Like I said, it’s something I started looking into probably six years ago and something I’ve continued to study. What that arena is, what it would mean, how could I be useful in it, would I be useful in it?”
McConaughey elaborated that politics is “not necessarily my language,” but he would consider it if he felt a strong pull. He noted, “It would happen when I would look up and see that I’m pulled into it in a way that, ‘Oh, I have to.’”
The actor, known for his role in Apple TV+’s ‘The Lost Bus’, had previously considered a run for the Texas governor’s office in 2021 but ultimately chose not to participate in the 2022 election cycle. With the 2026 election on the horizon, he mentioned that any political aspirations may need to wait until his three children are grown.
He expressed, “For now, I’m very secure with, the original thing I knew I always wanted to be was a dad.” McConaughey shares his oldest son Levi, 17, daughter Vida, 15, and younger son Livingston, 12, with wife Camila Alves McConaughey.
He added, “So let me do what I can with Camila to get these three kids out of the house as healthy individuals, as much as I can make that possible. And then opportunities or choices I can make, I’ll be much more free to make choices.”
