Upasana Konidela Claps Back at Egg-Freezing Backlash: ‘It’s My Right, Not a Privilege’

The wife of South superstar Ram Charan and an entrepreneur, Upasana Kamineni Konidela, has ignited an important discussion around women choosing to freeze their eggs to concentrate on their careers.

After facing backlash on social media, Upasana took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to share her perspective once again. She expressed her gratitude for the respectful responses to her thoughts, saying, “I’m happy to have sparked a healthy debate. Stay tuned as I voice my opinions on the pleasures and pressures of privilege that you all have been talking about.” She also encouraged her followers to check out her images, emphasizing that they contain important information for making informed comments. Additionally, she called on employers to collaborate in getting more women into the workforce.

In a thought-provoking post, Upasana posed several questions: “Is it wrong for a woman to marry for love instead of succumbing to societal pressure? Is it wrong for her to wait until she finds the right partner? Is it wrong for a woman to decide when to have children based on her circumstances? Is it wrong for a woman to pursue her career over the traditional expectations of marriage and early motherhood?”

In another message, she clarified her own journey, stating, “FACT CHECK: I married for love and companionship at 27—a choice I made on my own terms. At 29, I decided to freeze my eggs for personal and health reasons, something I’ve always spoken about openly to encourage other women to explore their options. (for the record, it wasn’t at Apollo.) I welcomed my first child at 36 and am now expecting twins at 39.” She emphasized, “Throughout my journey, I have given equal importance to building my career and nurturing my marriage because a happy, stable environment matters deeply when raising a family.” Upasana concluded, “For me, marriage and career are not competing priorities — they are equally meaningful parts of a fulfilled life. But I decide the timeline! That’s not privilege; it’s my right!!!”

For those who may not know, Upasana recently spoke about the concept of “freezing eggs” during an event in Hyderabad, emphasizing its significance for women who wish to focus on their careers before starting a family.

In a video she shared on her X account, Upasana said, “The biggest insurance for women is to freeze their eggs. Because then you can choose when to get married and when you want to have kids, on your own terms, when you are financially independent.”

Upasana and Ram Charan have been married since 2012 and welcomed their daughter in 2023 when she was 34. The couple is now reportedly expecting twins. During Diwali this year, Upasana announced her pregnancy through a social media post.
