Tom Cruise’s upcoming film with director Alejandro González Iñárritu has been titled “Digger,” and is set to release on October 2, 2026. In this movie, the superstar portrays “the most powerful man in the world.”
Teaser and Poster Reveal
The first poster and teaser for the Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment film have been unveiled, featuring the tagline “a comedy of catastrophic proportions.” Cruise excitedly shared the poster on Instagram, stating: “Introducing…DIGGER. A comedy of catastrophic proportions from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Only in theaters October 2026.”
Character Details and Plot Insights
In “Digger,” Cruise plays Digger Rockwell. While the full plot remains under wraps, Warner Bros. has provided a logline revealing that Cruise’s character is on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before a disaster he has triggered destroys everything.
Star-Studded Cast
The film boasts a talented cast, including Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, and Emma D’Arcy. This marks Cruise’s first project since he signed a deal to develop and produce theatrical films with Warner Bros. Discovery in January. His last collaboration with the studio was “Edge of Tomorrow,” nearly a decade ago.
Iñárritu’s English-Language Return
Having been filmed in the U.K. over six months, “Digger” is Iñárritu’s first English-language film since “The Revenant.” The film is produced and directed by Iñárritu, with a script co-written in 2023 alongside “Birdman” co-writers Nicolas Giacobone and Alexander Dinelaris, along with Sabina Berman. Both Cruise and Iñárritu are among the producers.
Venice Film Festival Premiere
The timing of the release hints that “Digger” could make its debut at the Venice Film Festival, where Iñárritu showcased his previous film, “Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths,” which received an Oscar nomination for best cinematography in 2023. He also presented other acclaimed films, including “Birdman,” which won best picture in 2015, and “21 Grams.”
The filmmaker has a longstanding connection with Cannes, having launched his international career 25 years ago with “Amores Perros,” and later presenting titles like “Babel” and “Biutiful.”
Iñárritu made a return to the Croisette with “Flesh and Sand” (“Carne y Arena”), a virtual-reality short that offers viewers the perspective of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border with a coyote, earning a special achievement Oscar in 2018.
