Mohanlal: Malayalam Icon Set to Receive Prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award!

Mollywood superstar Mohanlal is set to receive the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023, recognizing his exceptional contributions to Indian cinema.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced this on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating, “On the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee, the Government of India is pleased to announce that Shri Mohanlal will be conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023.”

Reflecting on Mohanlal’s cinematic journey, they noted, “Mohanlal’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! The legendary actor, director, and producer is being honoured for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema. His unmatched talent, versatility, and relentless hard work have set a golden standard in Indian film history.”

The award will be presented to the ‘Drishyam’ actor at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on September 23, 2025.

Mohanlal made his acting debut at 18 in the Malayalam drama “Thiranottam” back in 1978, although its release was delayed for 25 years due to censorship issues. He first appeared on screen in the 1980 romantic drama “Manjil Virinja Pookkal,” where he played the antagonist.

Over the years, Mohanlal proved his mettle in villainous roles while also taking on secondary leads. His significant breakthrough came with the 1986 crime drama “Rajavinte Makan.”

With a career spanning over four decades, he has featured in more than 400 films. In addition to his work in Malayalam cinema, Mohanlal has also acted in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada films.

In recognition of his contributions, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2001, followed by the Padma Bhushan in 2019. Additionally, in 2009, he became the first actor in the Indian film industry to be honored with the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army.
