Recognition for Amar Singh Chamkila
Diljit Dosanjh has received a nomination for the International Emmy Awards for his role in the film Amar Singh Chamkila. He has been nominated for Best Actor in a Lead Role for his performance in the biopic directed and co-written by Imtiaz Ali, which also stars Parineeti Chopra as his wife, Amarjot.
Chamkila is celebrated as the “Elvis of Punjab,” known for his provocative music that resonated with rural Punjab in the 1980s. The film intertwines performance sequences with the social realities that inspired Chamkila’s songs, touching upon issues of caste, desire, and conservatism.
The narrative follows Chamkila’s journey from a Dalit labourer and aspiring musician in Punjab to a folk icon celebrated for his bold lyrics, concluding with his tragic, unsolved assassination in 1988, when he was shot while performing on stage with his wife.
