Veteran actress Dharmendra has long captured the hearts of audiences not just with his remarkable screen presence but also through his candid charisma and outspoken nature.
During a promotional event for his 2018 sequel “Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se,” in which he starred alongside his sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol, Dharmendra was asked about his experience dancing with Rekha in the “Rafta Rafta Medley” track from the film.
His reaction, a humorous “Haye Haye Haye Haye,” brought laughter to the audience. He affectionately referred to Rekha as his old ‘saheli’, noting their history of collaborating on numerous films and how they have grown closer with each project.
Calling Rekha a ‘girl,’ Dharmendra hinted at her timeless beauty, stating, “Good girl, I say that because she is a girl like Dev sahab (Dev Anand).”
For context, the duo showcased their dance moves to the upbeat “Rafta Rafta Medley” in “Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se.” Their onscreen partnership stretches back to 1980, beginning with the film “Ram Balram,” where they shared the screen alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Zeenat Aman.
The two legends joined forces again in the 1982 drama “Ghazab,” where Dharmendra played a double role as Ajay “Munna” and Vijay, while Rekha portrayed Jamuna in a remake of the Tamil film “Kalyanaraman.”
They reunited for “Baazi” in 1984, where Dharmendra starred as Police Inspector Ajay Sharma and Rekha as Mrs. Asha Sharma. The film, directed by Raj N. Sippy, also featured Mithun Chakraborty, Ranjeeta, Shakti Kapoor, Madan Puri, and Mac Mohan in significant roles.
In 1987, they collaborated on “Jaan Hatheli Pe,” with Dharmendra as Soni Kapoor and Rekha as Geeta Verma, produced by Sudesh Kumar under the Vijaya Shree Pictures banner and directed by Raghunath Jhalani.
Their last appearance as leads together was in “Kasam Suhaag Ki” in 1989.
