Abhishek Banerjee Returns to Theatre After Two Decades with ‘Tu Kya Hai’
Actor Abhishek Banerjee, affectionately recognized as Jana from the “Stree” franchise, is making his comeback to theatre after a gap of twenty years. He will be starring in a satirical play titled “Tu Kya Hai.”
A Journey Back to Roots
Before stepping into Bollywood, Abhishek’s artistic journey began with stage plays in Delhi. He is reuniting with his original theatre group for this poignant mono satirical comedy, which is set to be staged this month at Mumbai’s National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA).
A Message of Artistic Reflection
Abhishek shared, “Theatre is where I learnt to breathe as an artist. It taught me rhythm, truth, and how to fail without fear. For the last 20 years, my journey has been about chasing roles, telling stories, and building a career in cinema but somewhere, the stage kept calling me back.”
Exploring Dreams and Struggles
“Tu Kya Hai” offers a sharp satire on the lives of many dreamers who abandon the comfort of their homes to pursue the elusive dream of becoming performance artists. Their journeys are fraught with pain, absurdity, and struggle, blurring the line between tragedy and comedy.
Three Evocative Chapters
The play unfolds in three evocative chapters:
- A typical middle-class Indian household that sees art merely as a hobby.
- The chaotic yet humorous hustle of Mumbai’s entertainment industry.
- The quiet, internal conflicts that resonate in the stillness of night.
A Personal Connection
Abhishek emphasized that “Tu Kya Hai” is deeply personal, reflecting his own life and the experiences of anyone who has ever questioned their identity.
“It’s about that late-night whisper we all hear ‘Tu kya hai?’ when the lights are off and the applause has faded. Coming back to the theatre to perform with my old theatre friends feels like closing a circle, or maybe starting a new one. This isn’t just a play for me; it’s a homecoming,” he added.
