Actress and comedian Amy Poehler recently revisited some memorable moments on her podcast, Good Hang, where she reflected on a flight incident involving a fellow first-class passenger. During this episode, she was joined by her Mean Girls co-star Ana Gasteyer.
Gasteyer shared her recollections from their time shooting the 2004 film. She specifically brought up a flight they both took when Poehler got into a confrontation with another passenger. “You got into a fight with a guy. Baby Frances was on the plane with us, do you remember that?” Gasteyer asked, adding that her daughter Frances is now 23.
Poehler was taken aback and responded, “And I still got into a fight with the guy with the baby around?” To which Gasteyer recalled, “I hope so, because the guy got mad that you were swearing in front of the baby.”
Explaining the incident further, Poehler described it as “a long story.” She recalled, “But what happened was a guy, a first-class guy—as we were in first class too—was like, ‘Excuse me, I’m trying to (relax). You’re being too loud.’” She humorously added, “My Boston came out, let’s just say that.”
Gasteyer, who welcomed her daughter with husband Charlie McKittrick in June 2002, characterized the argument as “the best thing I’ve ever seen.”
As the conversation progressed, Gasteyer fondly remembered the moment she first learned about Tina Fey’s interest in adapting ‘Mean Girls.’ “I remember hanging out with you in that hotel one night and having drinks,” she reminisced. “I have a memory of (Fey) sitting at the table and saying, ‘I think I’m going to try to option this book. It’s incredible.’”
Fey, now 55, ultimately adapted Rosalind Wiseman’s book Queen Bees and Wannabees into the blockbuster comedy film, which starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert. In the movie, Gasteyer portrayed Lohan’s character Cady Heron’s mother, while Poehler took on the role of McAdams’ character, Regina George’s mother.
