Brazil’s Fonseca aims for a spot in the world tennis top 15 rankings

Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca has set an ambitious goal for the upcoming year: to break into the world’s top 15 men’s tennis players. The 19-year-old, who enjoyed a successful 2025 season on the ATP Tour with two titles, views this achievement as just the beginning of his journey.

“I intend to break into the world’s top 15. It’s bold, but I’m thinking big,” said Fonseca in an interview with Veja. He added, “I will also be aiming for consistent results, without ups and downs.”

Starting the year ranked 113th, Fonseca has made impressive strides, climbing to No. 24 after clinching victories in Buenos Aires (ATP 250) and Basel (ATP 500). His standout moments in 2025 also included reaching the third round at the French Open and Wimbledon.

Beyond his tennis aspirations, Fonseca shared some personal New Year’s resolutions. “In my free time, I want to learn Italian, take a poker course, and manage my money,” he stated.

Brazil’s only men’s Grand Slam singles champion is Gustavo Kuerten, who triumphed at the French Open in 1997, 2000, and 2001.

In 2025, Fonseca has showcased his talent by reaching at least the second round in all four Grand Slam tournaments, having made it to the third round at both the French Open and Wimbledon. He has also represented Brazil in the Davis Cup, holding a 4-2 win-loss record in the prestigious men’s team competition.

In August 2024, he broke into the top 175, achieving a ranking of No. 166, after securing his first Challenger title at the 2024 Lexington Challenger, where he won without dropping a single set—making him the youngest Challenger champion of that season at 17.

Fonseca qualified for the 2024 Next Generation ATP Finals on November 29, 2024, and emerged victorious, despite being the lowest-ranked player in the tournament.

Continuing his upward trajectory in 2025, he captured his second Challenger title at the very first tournament of the season, the 2025 Canberra Tennis International, defeating American Ethan Quinn in the final. This win marked his 10th consecutive victory and elevated him to a new career-high ranking of No. 113.
