India secures 3-1 series victory in 5th T20I thanks to Varma, Pandya, Bumrah, and Chakaravarthy

Riding on Varun Chakaravarthy’s four-wicket haul and Jasprit Bumrah’s match-winning spell, India clinched the five-match T20I series 3-1 with a 30-run victory over South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

    Strong Batting Performance

On a black-soil pitch, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya put together a partnership of 105 runs for the fourth wicket. Varma scored 73 off 45 balls, while Pandya made 63 off 38 deliveries, notching his fifty in just 16 balls—the second fastest half-century by an Indian men’s batter in T20Is.

Sanju Samson replaced the injured Shubman Gill and contributed a stylish 37 runs, while Abhishek Sharma added a quick-fire 34 in a 63-run opening stand. Suryakumar Yadav struggled again, falling for five, but Varma and Pandya compensated with impressive hitting. Shivam Dube finished the innings with a flurry, hitting a four and a six in the final over, pushing India past the 230-run mark. Corbin Bosch was South Africa’s standout bowler, claiming 2-44, but overall, the Proteas struggled to contain India’s batting explosion.

    South Africa’s Chase Falters

Chasing a target of 232, South Africa looked promising at 118/1 at the half-way mark, with Quinton de Kock and Dewald Brevis in good form. However, Bumrah’s entry in the 11th over changed the game, as he dismissed de Kock for 63, taking a sharp return catch. From 120/1, South Africa collapsed to 135/5, with Chakaravarthy tightening the screws and finishing with figures of 4-53. Bumrah’s outstanding performance (2-17) saw him take key wickets, including de Kock and Marco Jansen. Ultimately, South Africa ended their innings at 201/8.

This result marked India’s eighth consecutive T20I series victory, a streak beginning in December 2023. South Africa started their chase aggressively, with de Kock hitting Arshdeep Singh for a hat-trick of boundaries in the first over to maintain the required run rate. Despite Reeza Hendricks struggling, the duo took the score to 67/0 by the end of the powerplay, with de Kock storming to 47 off 26 balls.

The breakthrough came in the seventh over when Hendricks, attempting to chip off Chakaravarthy, was caught brilliantly by Shivam Dube. De Kock reached his 18th T20I fifty, adding to the partnership with Brevis, who contributed to a 51-run stand.

    Crucial Wickets Shift Momentum

But Bumrah’s return swing altered the match’s trajectory as he caught de Kock, and Pandya soon removed Brevis with a slower bouncer. Chakaravarthy claimed Aiden Markram lbw and bowled Donovan Ferreira.

Arshdeep’s dismissal of David Miller and Chakaravarthy castling George Linde left South Africa in a precarious position at 163/7. Marco Jansen threatened momentarily with back-to-back sixes off Chakaravarthy, but Bumrah’s off-cutter claimed him in the 17th over, effectively sealing the match for India.

    Fast-Paced India Innings

India started with a brisk pace, racing to 25/0 in two overs. Abhishek’s aggressive approach paid off, hitting three boundaries against Marco Jansen in the second over, while Samson finished the over with a six.

There was an early scare for South Africa when wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock injured his finger but continued to play after treatment. Samson matched Abhishek with elegant shots, making 27 off 13 balls, but South Africa broke through when Abhishek gloved a bouncer to de Kock.

South Africa introduced spin post the powerplay, but India maintained their scoring momentum. Linde eventually got Samson out, and Suryakumar’s struggles continued as he fell for five. However, Varma and Pandya accelerated the innings, with Pandya smashing his way to 31 off seven balls.

Varma reached his half-century with a stylish shot off Lungi Ngidi, while Pandya’s explosive batting continued, resulting in a 16-ball fifty. His knock, striking at 252, ended when he was caught in the penultimate over. Varma was run out for 73 shortly after.

Dube finished innings powerfully, hitting a six and a four to help India surpass 230 runs, a target that proved to be enough for victory despite de Kock’s efforts.

    Brief Scores:
India: 231/5 (Tilak Varma 73, Hardik Pandya 63; Corbin Bosch 2-44, Ottniel Baartman 1-39)
South Africa: 201/8 (Quinton de Kock 65, Dewald Brevis 31; Varun Chakaravarthy 4-53, Jasprit Bumrah 2-17)
Result: India won by 30 runs.

  • 5th T20I: Yadav says ‘Surya the batter’ is missing but will return stronger

5th T20I: Yadav says ‘Surya the batter’ is missing but will return stronger

After India clinched a 3-1 T20I series win over South Africa with a 30-run victory in the fifth game, skipper Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged his own batting form was lacking during the series but promised to come back stronger with the bat in the future.

In the series, Suryakumar managed scores of 12, 5, 12, and 5, raising concerns about his form ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup. Nonetheless, he expressed satisfaction with India’s overall performance in T20Is this year, even though he didn’t score a single fifty.

“Maybe the only thing we couldn’t quite manage was finding ‘Surya the batter.’ I think he went missing somewhere! But he’ll be back stronger. As a team, I’m really happy. Whenever we were in trouble, someone always put their hand up and pulled us through. As captain, that’s very satisfying,” he stated in the post-match presentation ceremony.

    Team Approach and Tactics

Reflecting on the team’s approach in the series win, Suryakumar highlighted the emphasis on consistency and intent. “From the start of the series, we wanted to stick to a particular brand of cricket and we did exactly that. We didn’t try to do anything different.”

“We wanted to express ourselves in all departments and the results are right there in front of everyone. This is something we felt was missing in our last few series. This is exactly how we wanted to bat; once someone gets going, they don’t stop. We wanted that relentless intent, and today it worked beautifully,” he said.

Suryakumar also explained the tactical use of Jasprit Bumrah and praised Washington Sundar’s contribution with the ball. “Yes, we wanted to try something different. The plan was to use Bumrah for one over in the powerplay, control the middle phase after drinks, and then have him ready for the death overs.

“Washi stepped up brilliantly today and took responsibility. We were under pressure at times, we were challenged, but this game is about how you respond, and the boys did really well. It’s been challenging but a very good series. We did almost everything we wanted to,” he added.

    South Africa’s Reflection

South Africa skipper Aiden Markram remarked that chasing 232 always required a near-perfect execution but felt the experience of the T20I series would be valuable for their World Cup preparation.

“Chasing 232 was always going to need a near-perfect effort. Quinny and the top three set it up really well for us, and we were right in the contest. But in the middle overs, we just couldn’t quite maintain that momentum.

“Still, there’s plenty to take away—lessons we’ll learn as a group. With quite a few World Cup games being played here, I’m sure this experience will prove valuable. It was challenging, definitely. We were asked some tough questions.

“That’s a good thing because now we have a clearer idea of what’s required if we want to lift the World Cup. We faced a quality Indian side that played really well, and credit to them. But we also looked inward, identified areas to improve, and the lessons we’ve learned over these two weeks are invaluable,” he elaborated.

When asked if they gained clarity about their World Cup squad, Markram mentioned, “Absolutely. Early in the series, we did a bit of experimenting—different combinations, trying players in various roles, figuring out where we get the best out of everyone.

“I think now we’ve got a lot of answers. Heading into the World Cup, things will definitely be more structured. Whatever we do, it’ll be with one goal in mind—giving ourselves the best chance to lift that trophy.”

5th T20I: Pandya celebrates Yuvraj’s fastest T20I fifty record after his own 16-ball fifty

Hardik Pandya Reflects on Record-breaking Performance

India’s seam-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya expressed his surprise at registering the second-fastest T20I fifty for India, saying he was unaware of the achievement until after his dismissal. He shared his happiness that the record is still held by Yuvraj Singh.

Pandya dazzled fans with a remarkable 63 off just 38 deliveries, reaching his fifty in a mere 16 balls. This performance helped India post a total of 231/5 and secure a 30-run victory, clinching a 3-1 series triumph.

“Winning games is what you play for and it’s always exciting when your contribution helps the team get over the line. No, I didn’t know (about the second-fastest fifty) until I got out and went back. Our social media guys told me I was the second-fastest. My first reaction was, ‘Ah, I missed the top spot!’ But happy that Yuvi pa holds that record,” Pandya remarked after being named Player of the Match.

He elaborated on his mindset during the innings, noting that he had planned to start aggressively. “Today I just felt it. I actually told my partner beforehand that I was going to step out first ball and try to hit it for six. I was confident it would come off. The situation suited my style; I backed myself and it worked. I took a calculated risk and thankfully it went my way,” he said.

Pandya emphasized that his knock reflected his approach to challenges. “I’ve always enjoyed the challenge. No matter how many setbacks you face, the aim is to come back stronger, better, and make a bigger impact. When it all comes together, it feels satisfying. But the journey continues – the preparation, the planning, the hard work never stops.”

Varun Chakaravarthy Shines with Player of the Series Award

Wrist spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, named Player of the Series, shared his excitement over the high-intensity contest at the Narendra Modi Stadium. “It was a high-intensity match and probably the best game of the series. I really enjoyed it. That’s the role assigned to me; my first option is always to look for wickets.”

Chakaravarthy, who finished with figures of 4-53, highlighted the importance of constant evolution in his game. “Just by constantly evolving, I try to bring something new every series. If it works, great; if not, I go back, work on it and come back stronger. That’s how I keep improving. I would like to dedicate this to my mom, dad, and sister.”

Tilak Varma’s Intent on Batting Surface

Tilak Varma, who contributed significantly with a score of 73 and shared a century stand with Pandya, expressed his focus on maintaining intent on the batting-friendly surface. “I know how the Ahmedabad wicket goes (plays) here. The way Abhishek and Sanju bhai played at the start of the game, I knew that the wicket was good. So I just wanted to maintain that strike rate and show that intent.”

Commenting on batting alongside Pandya, who is also his IPL skipper at Mumbai Inddigihunt, Varma said, “It was incredible batting by Hardik bhai. It was a treat to watch from the non-striker’s end. The way he was hitting was very clean and he was fantastic to watch. Honestly, I don’t have a target in mind when batting. I just want to score as much as I can. We were looking to get 230-240 and we got there in the end.”

Varma concluded by sharing his commitment to improving his bowling. “To be frank, I’m really working hard on my bowling. Hopefully you can see me in the coming games. It’s better to ask Surya bhai (smiles). But hopefully, you can see me bowling in the coming games.”

However, it was Indian players like Sumit Nagal, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, and Dhakshineswar Suresh who captivated the crowd on the third competition day at the SM Krishna Stadium.

    Mixed Doubles Showdown

Tennis power couple Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina opened the Friday matches, with Monfils and Svitolina facing off as opponents. In an entertaining mixed doubles contest, Svitolina teamed up with Yuki Bhambri for the Hawks and managed to edge past Monfils and Shrivalli with a 6-4 scoreline.

    Kites’ Winning Start

In the day’s second match, Marta Kostyuk set a positive tone for the Kites by defeating Magda Linette 6-4. The Kites won three of the four sets on Friday, edging past the Falcons and Hawks to secure a place in the final.

Following a round-robin stage where every team faced each other in four set matches, the AOS Eagles and Aussie Mavericks Kites emerged victorious, setting the stage for the final encounter of WTL’s India debut.

India wins 5th T20I against SA by 30 runs, with Chakaravarthy and Bumrah shining to claim series 3-1

Riding on Varun Chakaravarthy’s impressive four wickets and Jasprit Bumrah’s match-winning spell, India clinched the five-match T20I series 3-1 with a 30-run victory over South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

    South Africa’s Chase
Chasing a daunting target of 232, South Africa started strongly, reaching 118/1 at the halfway mark, thanks to Quinton de Kock and Dewald Brevis. However, the introduction of Bumrah in the 11th over shifted the momentum as he took a sharp return catch to dismiss de Kock for 63.

The South African innings lost momentum quickly, slipping from 120/1 to 135/5. Chakaravarthy bowled excellently, finishing with figures of 4-53, while Bumrah’s 2-17 highlighted his effectiveness, taking out both de Kock and Marco Jansen with his slower deliveries.

Ultimately, South Africa managed only 201/8, handing India a comfortable victory. This result marked India’s eighth consecutive T20I series win, a streak that began in December 2023.

    Explosive Start for South Africa
South Africa’s chase began explosively as de Kock hammered a hat-trick of boundaries off Arshdeep Singh in the opening over. He followed that up with a six and additional fours to maintain the asking rate. Despite Reeza Hendricks struggling at the other end, the duo propelled the score to 67/0 at the end of the powerplay, with de Kock racing to 47 off 26 balls.

The first breakthrough came in the seventh over when Hendricks chipped a ball from Chakaravarthy to midwicket, where Shivam Dube took an outstanding one-handed catch. De Kock continued to march on, reaching his 18th T20I fifty, forming a 51-run partnership with Brevis as South Africa surged to 118 for one after 10 overs.

Bumrah’s entry into the game was decisive, as he dismissed de Kock with a sharp return catch. Hardik Pandya followed up by removing Brevis with a slower bouncer, while Chakaravarthy struck again, dismissing Aiden Markram lbw and then castling Donovan Ferreira.

Arshdeep dismissed David Miller, and Chakaravarthy clean-bowled George Linde, leaving South Africa reeling at 163/7. Marco Jansen briefly threatened with back-to-back sixes off Chakaravarthy, but Bumrah’s off-cutter ended his innings in the 17th over, effectively sealing the match for India. This win solidifies the hosts’ perfect build-up in their quest to retain the T20 World Cup trophy next year at home.

    Brief Scores
India 231/5 (Tilak Varma 73, Hardik Pandya 63; Corbin Bosch 2-44, Ottniel Baartman 1-28) beat South Africa 201/8 (Quinton de Kock 65, Dewald Brevis 31; Varun Chakaravarthy 4-53, Jasprit Bumrah 2-17) by 30 runs.

  • IWL 2025-26: Top Indian Women’s Football Teams Gear Up for Exciting Showdown in Bengal

IWL 2025-26: Top Indian Women’s Football Teams Gear Up for Exciting Showdown in Bengal

The ninth season of the Indian Women’s League is set to kick off on Saturday, featuring eight teams vying for the title of India’s top women’s football club. Defending champions East Bengal FC will aim to secure their title on home turf, as the 2025-26 league is organized in a centralized format in Kolkata and Kalyani.

In the past three seasons, the IWL crown has seen three different champions. East Bengal and Odisha FC claimed their first titles in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, respectively, breaking Gokulam Kerala FC’s streak, which saw them win three titles in a row from 2020 to 2023. An intriguing aspect of last season was Odisha FC’s relegation, marking them as the first reigning champions in Indian top-flight league history to be relegated the following season.

    Tournament Format

The 2025-26 IWL will feature a double round-robin format, divided into two phases coinciding with the Indian senior and U20 women’s teams’ Asian Cup campaigns. Each club will play seven matches in the first phase from December 20, 2025, to January 9, 2026. The second phase will commence on April 20, 2026, concluding on May 10, 2026.

    Key Storylines to Watch

    • East Bengal FC is on a quest to become only the second team to defend an IWL title.
    • Gokulam Kerala aims to add a fourth star to their crest.
    • Sethu FC seeks to reclaim a trophy from the favorites.
    • Newly-promoted Garhwal United FC and Sesa Football Academy are eager to prove themselves in top-tier football.
    • Sribhumi FC, designated as dark horses last season, hopes to build on their success.

    East Bengal FC

2025 has been a remarkable year for East Bengal. In just their third season in the IWL, they showcased dominance by finishing eight points ahead of Gokulam. Since August, the Moshal Girls have been actively representing India in Asia, successfully navigating the preliminary round of the AFC Women’s Champions League in Cambodia. They faced tough competition in China during the group stage, falling short in their knockout stage aspirations due to a last-minute goal. Despite this setback, they have excelled in the SAFF Women’s Club Championship, scoring 13 goals without conceding any. East Bengal will begin their title defense on December 24 against Sethu FC, looking to bolster their confidence with a potential international trophy.

    Gokulam Kerala FC

As they enter their ninth IWL season, Gokulam Kerala remains the only team with multiple championship titles. The club significantly reshaped women’s football in India but has faced challenges in the past two seasons. With a new head coach, Raman Vijayan, and some key signings—including senior national players Shreya Hooda and Priyadharshini S.—they hope to reclaim their title. Although they lost top scorer Fazila Ikwaput to East Bengal, they retained defender Phoeby Okech and brought in new talents like Ghanaian midfielder Sandra Atinga.

    Sribhumi FC

Fresh off a successful debut season where they finished third, Sribhumi FC aims to improve further under the guidance of AIFF Women’s Coach of the Year, Sujata Kar. They have made several high-profile domestic signings, including Anju Tamang and Grace Dangmei, and retained their strong scoring duo, Bala Devi and Mousumi Murmu. The squad also boasts impressive youngsters from the Indian U20 squad.

    Kickstart FC

With finishes of third, second, third, and fourth in the past four seasons, Kickstart FC remains a consistent top-half team. Last season started tough, but they finished strong with six unbeaten matches. Head coach Chaoba Devi enters her third season with the team, now featuring a new foreign line-up. The core of the squad remains intact, ensuring continuity.

    Sethu FC

One of three former champions in this season’s lineup, Sethu FC has struggled to replicate past success since their last title in the 2021-22 season. With a new head coach, Manoj Joshi, and new attacking signings such as Lynda Kom, they are poised for a resurgence. Key returning players like Malavika P and Babina Lisham are expected to anchor the squad.

    Nita Football Academy

Nita FA had a mixed debut season, narrowly avoiding relegation. Coach Paromita Sit will look to improve in their second season. Despite the departure of their top scorer Rahama Jafaru, they signed prolific striker Pyari Xaxa and several promising U20 talents.

    Garhwal United FC

Garhwal United FC enters its inaugural IWL campaign with excitement following a dominant previous season in lower tier football. They secured eight wins out of eight and boast a youthful squad with a majority of academy players. Key player Lhingdeikim, an India U20 international, stands out as they make their mark in the top tier.

    Sesa Football Academy

Sesa Football Academy returns to the IWL as the first Goan side in recent years after their third-place finish in IWL 2. Despite significant changes in their squad, they retain key players like Aniela Barretto. Foreign signings like Kenyan forward Omita Bertha will be crucial for their goal of avoiding relegation.

All matches will be streamed live on the Indian Football YouTube channel.

Gukesh defeats Alireza as Triveni Continental Kings secure narrow victory to stay on top

World Champion D Gukesh avenged his earlier loss to Alireza Firouzja in the reverse fixture. However, defending champions Triveni Continental Kings managed to secure a 10-9 victory over PBG Alaskan Knights, maintaining their position at the top of the leaderboard after match day six. Meanwhile, Mumba Masters put pressure on the leaders with an 11-6 win over Ganges Grandmasters in the Global Chess League (GCL) on Friday.

As the third edition of the GCL transitions into the second leg of the group stage, the Triveni Continental Kings had a chance to extend their lead over the Mumba Masters with two matches on the day. The champions initially faced a setback against Alpine SG Pipers after their icon player Alireza Firouzja lost to Fabiano Caruana. This put additional pressure on them to win against the Alaskan Knights, especially since Mumba Masters had briefly taken the lead after their victory over Ganges Grandmasters.

The Continental Kings forged ahead with a six-point advantage as Alexandra Kosteniuk defeated Sara Khadem, and Wei Yi triumphed over Arjun Erigaisi. However, Kateryna Lagno scored four points for the Knights by winning against Zhu Jiner, bringing the team back into contention.

Gukesh, who had previously lost to Alireza in the tournament, played a robust game with Black and capitalized on his time advantage to hand the 22-year-old his second loss of the day in a rook-pawn endgame. Despite Gukesh’s victory, it was not enough for the Knights to secure their third consecutive win. Vidit Gujarathi finally found his winning momentum by defeating Leinier Dominguez in 39 moves, ensuring his team remained on top with 15 match points.

Vidit, named Player of the Match, expressed his relief, saying, “It’s a relief. It feels like you are climbing a mountain and you get an oxygen cylinder. Today, I was very upset after the first game and I am really happy that my win counted for the team.”

5th T20I: Tilak, Hardik Shine with Fifties as India Posts 231/5 vs South Africa

Powered by scintillating half-centuries from Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya, India posted a formidable 231/5 in their 20 overs in the fifth T20I against South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday.

    Key Performances

In an innings where umpire Rohan Pandit and a camera operator took some blows on separate occasions, Varma and Pandya added 105 runs for the fourth wicket. Varma made 73 off 45 balls, while Pandya hammered 63 off 38 deliveries, including getting his fifty in just 16 balls—the second fastest half-century by an India men’s batter in T20Is.

Sanju Samson, stepping in for the injured Shubman Gill, contributed an attractive 37. Abhishek Sharma chipped in with a brisk cameo of 34 in a 63-run opening stand. Suryakumar Yadav’s lean run continued as he fell for five, but Varma and Pandya made up for it with some audacious hitting.

    Finishing Strong

Shivam Dube provided the finishing touches by hitting a four and six in the final over, as India crossed the 230-run mark. For South Africa, seam-bowling all-rounder Corbin Bosch was the standout bowler with figures of 2-44. However, the Proteas were unable to contain India’s batting surge, leaving the hosts in a strong position to push for a series-clinching win.

    Fast Start

Pushed into batting first on a black soil pitch, India made a brisk start, racing to 25/0 in two overs. Abhishek frequently pierced the off-side field against Marco Jansen for three fours in the second over, before Samson ended it with a trademark loft over mid-on for six.

There was concern for South Africa early on when wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock injured his finger while collecting the ball in the opening over. Despite visible discomfort, he continued behind the stumps after receiving treatment. Samson matched Abhishek stroke for stroke, unfurling elegant drives and punches down the ground to reach 27 off 13 balls.

    Breaking Through

After the opening pair went past fifty in their partnership, South Africa finally broke through when Abhishek gloved a bouncer down leg from Bosch to de Kock, who completed the catch despite not appealing initially.

South Africa turned to spin after the powerplay, introducing Donovan Ferreira and George Linde. But India continued to score freely as Varma and Samson picked boundaries. Linde, however, struck in his second over, castling Samson with a delivery that pitched on leg and clipped off-stump.

Suryakumar’s lean run persisted, falling for five, caught at mid-off off Bosch, ending the year without a fifty in T20Is. From 115/3 in the 12th over, India’s innings received a turbo boost from Pandya and Varma, who counter-attacked in blazing fashion.

    Explosive Batting

Pandya blazed his way to 31 off seven balls, hitting a six and a four off Bosch before taking down Linde with a four and two sixes. Varma reached his half-century with a fluent punch against Lungi Ngidi for four, while Pandya’s assault continued as he smashed Bosch for a four and two sixes to bring up a 16-ball fifty, the second-fastest by an Indian in T20Is.

Pandya’s knock, coming at a strike rate of 252, was eventually cut short when he picked out deep midwicket off Ottniel Baartman in the penultimate over. Two balls later, Varma’s innings ended dramatically when he was run out for 73. Dube, however, finished with a flourish, striking a six and a four to push India past the 230-mark.

    Brief Scores:
India 231/5 in 20 overs (Tilak Varma 73, Hardik Pandya 63; Corbin Bosch 2-44, Ottniel Baartman 1-39) against South Africa.
