Ram Lakhan: Directed by Subhash Ghai in 1989 starring Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit and Dimple Kapadia, ‘Ram Lakhan’ is one of the few brilliant Hindi films. There were several attempts to remake this classic, but nothing really happened, as every actor wanted to play Lakhan. However, very few people know that it was actually a flop film that inspired Subhash Ghai to make this blockbuster.
Saw the film on special screening
In 1988, the famous writer Salim Khan wrote a film ‘Falak’, which was directed by Shashilal. The film starred Jackie Shroff and Shekhar Kapur as brothers, the latter playing a cop. The story takes forward the story of how two brothers avenge their father’s death. The writer had organized a special screening of the film for industry people at Light Box in Santacruz and Subhash Ghai was one of the many people who saw the film. While the film was appreciated for its powerful dialogues, the audience unanimously criticized it for its slow pace.
Reportedly, the film was written by Salim Khan to answer those complaining about how he was not contributing dialogues to iconic films penned by the Salim-Javed duo. As a result, the dialogues were very strong and people liked it. But the film was not liked. Riding high on the success of films like Karz, Vidhaata, Hero and Karma, Subhash Ghai met Salim Khan and told him that the film was not working for him. However, he was impressed with the concept and apparently informed Salim Saab that he would soon make a more commercial version of Falak, as he felt the script was too bland.
A year later, and he came up with Ram Lakhan, where two brothers, one a cop and the other from the other side of the law, come together to avenge their father’s death. And well, the rest is history as the film is considered a textbook of commercial cinema in the Hindi film industry. As they say, the same story can be interpreted differently by different directors and the story of Falak and Ram Lakhan is a prime example of how presentation can make a huge difference in the end result.
