Gangubai For Oscars: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s films have often made their presence felt in the international circuit as well as among the cine audience in the overseas market. In the last two decades, India came closest to getting a nomination at the prestigious Oscar ceremony in the year 2002. There were chances of getting entry in Bhansali-directed film ‘Devdas’, which starred Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit.
Now, the buzz is that ‘Gangubai’ starring Alia Bhatt is one of the few films that could be India’s official entry for the Oscars this year. The film had several international premieres earlier this year and also received a standing ovation from the audience at the Berlin Film Festival. On the business front, it is one of the highest grossing Indian films in the international belt, with an overseas collection of $7.50 million.
Talking about Gangubai, it is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 10th directorial venture after Khamoshi, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Black, Saawariya, Guzaarish, Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani, Ram Leela and Padmavat.
