DU Tells St Stephens College

New Delhi: The University of Delhi (DU) on Monday wrote to St Stephen’s College asking it to take admission to unreserved seats on the basis of CUET scores only. The university has also asked the college not to sub-categorize under Christian community. There has been a tussle between the college and the university and the former has insisted that it will give 85:15 weightage to the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores and interviews of all categories of candidates. DU vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh said the university has written to the college that they have to comply with the executive council’s resolution to conduct admissions to general seats on the basis of CUET scores. “We have written to them that for minority seats, 85 percent weightage should be given to CUET score and 15 percent weightage to interview. Being a minority institution, the college reserves 50 percent of its seats for Christian candidates. Till last year, of the seats earmarked for Christian students, 50 per cent were reserved for those belonging to the Church of North India, while the other half were filled by candidates belonging to the Diocese of Delhi, the Church of North India, which manages college.

Officials said that the university will not even allow the college to have its own separate counseling process.

In an admissions notice posted on its website last month, St Stephen’s College said it would give 85 percent weightage to CUET scores and 15 percent weightage to all categories of students interviewed. The college also stated that it reserves the right to proceed with the admission as per its admission policy guaranteed as a minority institution.
