Despite the rise in COVID-19 cases in the state, Bollywood director and producer Karan Johar on December 30 requested the government of Delhi to reopen the theaters. In a social media post, Johar asked the government to run theaters and said they are urging the Delhi government to run cinemas. Compared to other out-of-home settings, movie theaters have a superior ability to maintain a hygienic atmosphere while also enforcing social distancing rules. This happened after the Producers Guild of India made a similar request, claiming that theaters create a safe environment for moviegoers.

Following a spike in COVID-19 cases caused by the appearance of the Omicron variant, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal ordered a yellow warning in the state on December 28, requiring schools, universities, theaters and gyms to close. Meanwhile, the Multiplex Group of India (MAI) released a statement earlier in the day, which the association posted on social media.
