Mushtaq Merchant had starred in various Bollywood films and built a name for himself in the entertainment business throughout the years. To mention a few, he appeared in Seeta Aur Geeta, Saagar, Haath Ki Safai, Fiffty Fiffty, Pyaar Ka Saaya, and Saagar.
He also appeared in Dharmendra’s, Amitabh Bachchan’s, Hema Malini’s Sholay, however his participation in the classic film was apparently cut from the final edit due to the film’s length. He apparently had two roles in the film, one as a railway driver and the other as a motorbike thief shortly before the song ‘Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge.’
From a young age, he had a passion for performing. In his high school, he played a double part in a drama named Hajamat, and he subsequently pursued a career in acting. According to asianetnews, he also received the Best Actor Award at the All India Intercolleges in Mumbai. The famous actor and comedian announced his retirement from performing almost 16 years ago. He became a Sufi and devoted himself solely to religious pursuits. He has dabbled as a theatrical performer during his acting career.

Hanif Zaveri, a close personal friend of Mushtaq Merchant, informed sources that Mushtaq died as a result of high blood pressure and diabetes. He had diabetes for the previous 10-12 years. He was brought to the hospital in the morning due to his failing condition. He died just a few hours later. In terms of his professional career, ‘Jawaani Deewani’ was Mushtaq Merchant’s debut film as an actor. Mushtaq Merchant is most known for his work as a character actor in films like as ‘Sholay,’ ‘Khoon Bhari Maang,’ ‘Gangaa Jamunaa Saraswathi,’ and others. Mushtaq Merchant also wrote a number of plays and films. According to the sources, the late actor will have final rituals and will be laid down at Bada Qabrastan in Marine Lines.
