Govt urges auto manufacturers to start production of flex fuel vehicles

New Delhi:

Automobile manufacturers have been urged to start manufacturing flex-fuel vehicles and flex-fuel robust hybrid electric vehicles, compliant with BS-VI (Bharat Stage-VI) emission norms, within six months.

Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Monday that the suggestion has been given to automobile manufacturers as it will help in reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles well. It will also help the country meet its commitment made in COP26 to reduce total estimated carbon emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030.

Official sources said the move would also help replace India’s petroleum imports.

“To replace imports of petroleum as India’s fuel, we have now advised automobile manufacturers in India to start manufacturing Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) and Flex Fuel Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicles (FFV-SHEVs) which comply with BS-VI norms. In a time bound manner within a period of six months,” the minister said in a series of tweets.

He explained that flex fueled vehicles are capable of running on 100 per cent petrol or a combination of 100 per cent bio-ethanol as well as their blends.
